Southern RI Parker Shoot?

Hello Everyone,

I have been thinking about trying to organize a Parker shoot at the sporting clays place that I go to all the time and has helped keep me outdoors and shooting during these challenging times.

If there is interest, I was thinking a Saturday or Sunday in March. This would be at Peace Dale Shooting Preserve in South Kingstown, Rhode Island: https://www.pdshootingpreserve.com/

I mentioned this to one of the owners the other day and they he seemed interested and willing to help make it a great event. I really like the 2 courses they have and the owners/staff are friendly/helpful. We would still have to watch the weather, but it should be a good time for us Parker folks to get together.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay, looks like a nice place. I would be interested if you organize a shoot in March, depending to the date.

Thanks

Andrew Sacco 02-15-2021 01:09 PM

If I'm around I'll drive out for sure. It's only about 5 hours for me, which is nothing if my wife wants to go hit Providence for a day. She used to live there.

Dean Romig 02-15-2021 01:34 PM

Keep us posted Jay. I'll make it if I can.

Jay Oliver 02-15-2021 01:45 PM

This is off to a great start! I'll see what the interest is throughout the week and then float a few date arounds. I was thinking mid to late March, but I work with everyone to find a date that works.

Andy, I thing you mentioned you like to saltwater fly fish? While it will still be too cold in March, you would be a stones throw from some amazing striper fishing. Things usually start on that in mid to late April. There are however a few nice fly shops you might want to visit if you make the trip.

I'll keep everyone posted and I am optimistic we can make this happen.

Thank you,
Jay

Andrew Sacco 02-15-2021 02:21 PM

Thank you Jay! I have never fished for stripers but have to give that a shot this year. Buddy of mine has a home in RI and we're tentatively planning a weekend this spring.

Larry Frey 02-15-2021 06:29 PM

Jay,
I would also attend depending on the date.

Jay Oliver 02-15-2021 06:39 PM

Would Saturday March 20th or 27th work?

Dean Romig 02-15-2021 06:57 PM

Either of those dates work for me.

.

bob lyons 02-15-2021 07:59 PM

I would attend as well the sooner you get the dates the better.
It would be nice to meet some of you guys.

Frank Cronin 02-15-2021 08:36 PM

I'll be interested in going. Looks like a nice venue plus an indoor pistol range to boot in case it rains!

Dean Romig 02-15-2021 09:11 PM

I agree - it would be great to meet some new faces.

.

Jay Oliver 02-15-2021 09:30 PM

It always so nice to meet people from PGCA in person. I am optimistic this is going to happen!

Now that we have interest in this, I'll work with the owner and follow up as soon as I can. I probably should have done that before I threw a few dates out there. At the same time I wanted to have a few preferences to ask about.

Thank you!
Jay

Dave Suponski 02-16-2021 05:56 AM

Looks interesting!

allen newell 02-16-2021 10:59 AM

I'm in depending on weather. Great idea and thank you Jay for the planning

Chuck Bishop 02-16-2021 12:11 PM

Possibly.

Jay Oliver 02-16-2021 06:31 PM

I should have an update tomorrow. I'll will share the dates I am able to confirm are available. With any luck, this will be scheduled by the end of the week.

Thanks,
Jay

Jay Oliver 02-19-2021 05:24 PM

I just confirmed the 27th so we're on!

Just so everyone has the information, This will be:

Saturday 3/27 @ 9am
Peace Dale Shooting Preserve - South Kingstown, RI
https://www.pdshootingpreserve.com

We'll do the main sporting clays course and they have 5-stand for later if anyone is interested.

I would like to give them an estimate of the size of our group so please let me know, if you haven't mentioned it already in the thread. Hopefully, we will have some nice weather and a fun shoot!

allen newell 02-19-2021 05:54 PM

I'm in!

Dean Romig 02-19-2021 05:59 PM

I'll sure try to be there.

.

Andrew Sacco 02-19-2021 06:02 PM

Just have to confirm the other half doesn't have any plans, and if not, I'm in. Will know shortly

bob lyons 02-19-2021 08:14 PM

I’m in

bob lyons 02-19-2021 08:19 PM

I’m in see you on the 27 at 9

Andrew Sacco 02-19-2021 08:25 PM

Hi Jay. If I can make it, any recommendations for lodging close by since I'll come in the night before, shoot and miss, then make the 4 1/2 hour drive back home.

Larry Frey 02-19-2021 09:25 PM

Thanks Jay, it's on my calendar.

Donald McQuade 02-20-2021 08:19 AM

Thanks for setting this up Jay. I am in, and I might bring along a shooting buddy of mine. He is a M21 guy (don't hold that against him) but does have a couple of Parkers he can shoot.

Jay Oliver 02-20-2021 10:53 AM

This is great response already! I am looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting some PGCA members I haven't met before. This will be fun...

bob lyons 02-20-2021 12:55 PM

Jay
I have 2 others that would be going if okay, one is a PGCA member but does not do much on line and other is not a member.
If that is an issue please let me know.
Should we assume they will have Ammo available if needed ?
Bob

Jay Oliver 02-20-2021 05:34 PM

Bob, yes please bring your friends. That is a good question about ammo. They do have modern shells(2 3/4") in stock, and I just saw several cases of 1oz. 12 gauge shells the other day. They have 410 and 28 as well. I am not sure about 16 and 20, but I'll check. They are not currently carrying RSTs so I would order direct from RST in advance if that's what you use.

allen newell 02-20-2021 05:52 PM

Better order from RST asap as they are running short of shotshells.

Andrew Sacco 02-20-2021 09:59 PM

I live 25 minutes from RST and I cannot, for the life of me, get them to let me pick up shells from them and have to pay a $50 to $75 shipping fee each time I get 3-5 flats. They simply will not allow any pick up at the facility. In any event, I ordered what they had in stock on their website and got them within 2 weeks but they run out quick so you need to check their website DAILY, it changes quickly. The reason I even brought this up is because I would have offered to pick up a bulk order for guys at the RI shoot and bring them up (if I'm coming up, still trying to firm up that small detail...). Anyways, how many shells should one bring? That will dictate what guns I bring as I have more of some shells than others.

Dave Suponski 02-21-2021 09:05 PM

On my calendar. Thank you

john pulis 02-22-2021 07:19 AM

One of the LI boys wil try to make it, but the Port Jeff ferry is on a winter schedule and the first is 7a, so I doubt we could make a 9a lift off at Peace Dale. We would take the New London-Orient PT on return.

Russell E. Cleary 02-22-2021 03:15 PM

Jay:

Count me in.

Kathy G. and I are going to make this a micro-mini vacation.
We have a room booked at Sugar Loaf Hill Bed and Breakfast in Wakefield (Peace Dale), which is supposed to be five minutes from the shooting preserve.

sugarloafhill@verizon.net

Stephanie at the front desk (an owner) says, if bad weather washes us out, we can cancel at no charge.

Kathy will not be shooting (unless she wants to take some shots on my card).

That region of Rhode Island I have spent very little time in, but looks to be well-worth exploring.

Thanks for taking this on.

edgarspencer 02-23-2021 06:29 AM

Russell, Just leave her a half tank of gas. That's all she'll need to do Rhode Island.
I have lots of RI friends. Surprising, they all know each other. Everything is just 'down the road'.

Dean Romig 02-23-2021 06:37 AM

And they all like to eat quahogs too. :rotf:

What Fool wouldn't? Quahogs make the best chowder too.

Remind me sometime to tell you about the 15-20 'almost full' bushels we took to Nantucket every friday night.

Dean Romig 02-23-2021 12:17 PM

I was attempting to perpetuate the cartoons I would often see in Yankee Magazine in the 70’s and 80’s where they poked fun at Rhode Islanders and their affinity for quahogs.

I agree - they’re delicious! And arent “cherrystones” just small quahogs?

.

Chuck Bishop 02-23-2021 12:59 PM

Made my reservations. Weather permitting, I'm bringing a friend along. The site says $30 for a 4 man cart. Hopefully that is not per person. Can a cart be reserved in advance?

Dean:

Yes. My understanding: all the same species, different stage in growth:

Quahogs: full grown
Cherrystones: Junior League
Little Necks: small fry
