Remington 2 inch shells?
 

Got a call on some vintage Ammo. Remington Shur Shot is quite common but I have not seen the 2 inch shells before. Crate goes with the shells.

Any idea on what year these are from and if they were made for a specific use?

Intersting shells. The 2" 12 gauge had a following in the UK in the 1930s. I wonder why Remington would have developed 2" shells in the US. What are the other shells in the crate?

Eley 2 inch.

The 12-gauge 2-inch Remington Shur Shot shells seem to be pretty common. They appear regularly in the Wards Auctions. This full box went for $104 in the auction just ended --

I've been aware of them most of my life as my Father had one in his box of assorted shotgun shells in his gun cabinet. His shell is #7 1/2 C. All of them I've seen are Kleanbore so they are after 1931. The load given on the top wad in the shell my Father had is 2 3/4 dram equiv., while the box on Wards is 2 1/2 dram equiv. and your shells James are 2 1/4 dram equiv. all with a 3/4 ounce payload.

One more thing I notice is your shells, James, have the DuPont logo making them after 1934, while the box from the Wards Auction doesn't have the DuPont logo.

Love that label from Abercrombie & Fitch on the case with the name and address of the original purchaser.

I have one box of the shells Dave pictured, and have seen identical ones over the years at gun shows. I dare say the crate is a rarity; I've never seen one of those and the one pictured by James is a nice one. BTW, RST loads 2-inch shells for use in guns chambered thusly.

I looked through all of the Remington ammunition catalogs and price lists from 1932 to WW-II that I have access to, which are just about every one. These shells were not a catalog item. They were likely special ordered by large sporting goods dealers who might handle such guns to assure their customers a supply of shells.

Wonder what kind of gun Mrs. Robert ?ucus, Clover Brook Farm, Pawling, NY, had.

Looks like the farm still exists.....

2" guns were offered by sellers in the American Rifleman in the thirties. I can't remember the name of the maker. I think Kimball Arms marketed them. Abercrombie and Fitch would be the likely seller of ammunition for these British guns. $104.00 a box? OK, mine are for sale.

So the crisp sealed box on Wards sold for $104, so this ratty one is worth $100?

Holland and Holland listed a 2" 12 gauge gun in the 1939 Stoeger catalog. That would be the kind of gun used at Clover Brook Farm. One of the houses at Clover Brook Farm had 37 rooms.
