Decent Hammer gun cost?

I am on the lookout for a decent honest original hammer gun in 20 or 16 gauge. The fuller the choke the better. Top lever, not a lifter. Obviously the more condition the better but I doubt I can afford a closet queen. I would like some case though.

What should I be expecting to pay?

Thanks

Ryan

Im not going to touch this I would visit GI and if you see a 20 or 16 hammer figure a little lower than their asking prices you just dont see many of what your looking for , at least I dont .

There are 16's available but a 20 would be hard to find and would likely be costly due to their rarity.

Sixteen, more than a thousand. Twenty, thousands.

[QUOTE=Bill Murphy;319150]Sixteen, more than a thousand.

And depending on the gun, multiples of a $thousand.

I sold a nice G top action hammer 16g /30” for $2,000 a year ago. I probably could have charged more. Full and full, nice barrels, nice condition, O frame.

I sold it because I have a 28” G hammer 1 frame 12 that weighs 7 lbs and the 16 weighed a couple ounces more.

Thanks Bruce,

That's kind of what I am looking for. It seems if a 16 comes my way I can make it happen. If a 20 comes my way I need to be prepared.

I'm not looking for a deal, I am looking to not spend 10 years waiting for the right price to come along. I don't want to be fleeced either.

Thanks

Ryan

Only a couple months back, I also listed a 30" Grade 2, 16ga., and despite it being completely restored, I wasn't ashamed to ask, and get just shy of $5k. It sold immediately and there were several disappointed respondents. The value realized on a restored gun is based partly on it's configuration, but also, a large part depends on who did the work. Mine was worked on by one of the best stock makers, and one of the best gunsmiths alive at that time. That's what I'm shooting in my picture to the left.

Check with Allan McLane on this site. He had a 16 gauge top action hammer gun listed a couple years back that may still be for sale.

Dean Romig 12-20-2020 11:37 AM

Allan’s is still for sale but he hasn’t actively advertised it lately. He told me yesterday.
It’s a really nice grade-1 with 28” Laminated steel barrels.

I know this because it used to be mine before it was Allan’s and has accounted for a fair number of grouse and woodcock... and it’s a lot of fun on a sporting clays course too.

I sold it because I had five of them and wanted to make room in my safe for something else.

He still has it, and it’s still for sale.

I'd hold out for the lifter.

Dean Romig 12-20-2020 07:57 PM

But there are a lot fewer Lifter 16’s avaikable.

Price, Allan? Great pictures.

Dean Romig 12-21-2020 08:36 AM

It sold yesterday Bill for $3250.00 or some agreed upon figure. $3250 was the last published (lowered) price.

Looking at the posted dates the gun had been at $3250 for ten months . Wish I’d paid attention and seen it earlier :banghead:
