Waiting on Barrels
 

So after inquiring on this site where to get barrels redone for my 1895 DH, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with Breck Gorman. Nice fellow to work with, and he has his shipping to and from nailed down. Now the wait begins. Hopefully February. Grade 4 Damascus, can't wait. Amazing what the Timberlux did for the stock. Also suggested here. Much thanks for pointing me in the correct direction.

How about a picture of those barrels that "needed refinishing"? What little we can see of the "old" barrels looks pretty good. Thanks and good luck on your project.

I second Bill's request. Any photos of the barrels as before and then after? I have an 1893 undergoing a refurbish at this time.

Those barrels refinished by Breck will definitely be worth the wait. (a satisfied customer.)

Some may recall the barrel situation on my VHE 16 with 32" barrels..Breck refinished them flawlessly..and they were damaged by FEDEX in return..AND..FEDEX refused to pay..even though they were in a PVC tube. Breck fixed the dent ..perfectly..If you want the best..call Breck...jv..

Per request I had the before and Breck was nice enough to send me the during last night after seeing request. Thinking of having the rest re-cut. Found Roland Robidoux here in FL mentioned in a much older post. Will talk to him tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement.

I believe in your previous thread on this gun you had alluded to the barrels having been ‘restored’ previously?

I guess you know by now that guy was an unmitigated rube.

Dean, ya, what I didn't know :banghead:. The guy was local and didn't charge me much. He also sells used guns, so I'll show it to him when finished and see if I can get a discount on something. Although you were brutally honest in that original post, (I'm trying to be tactful) I really do appreciate your inspiring me to get it done right. Lesson learned. :bowdown:

Breck says and I quote "Luckily there is plenty of wall thickness and I was able to polish out the pits. It was a lot of work. It will be well within the parameters that most experts deem “safe to shoot” with appropriate loads. "

What do you think about re-cutting?

You could ask Geoffroy Gournet to give you an estimate to recut the engraving and you’ll be able to decide for yourself. Then you could have Brian give you an estimate on restoring the stock finish and checkering. It’s your call but remember, you’ll never recoup your investments.

Robert...Roland has done several guns for me in the last 20 years..including gold work. When he lived in South Florida, he was about 10 miles from me. He does a lot of work for Colt..and..as I recall did the colt for Pres. Bush. If he is too busy..look up Rod Dilling in Lake Placid...

Proper engraving recutting would mean annealing the metal, polishing, recutting and then re-case hardening the frame. I would estimate that all may cost you upwards of $3,000.

Some would recut it in its hard state with carbide cutters, but the results can be less than desirable in my opinion.

Where are you at in S FL.? I am in Jensen Beach.

After removing a layer of what looked like clear cerakote and a layer of a rust neutralizer, the barrel had external pitting completely covering the length of both tubes.
I know that whether to refinish or not can be subjective, but this barrel had been terribly neglected by a previous owner, and “restored” by someone. It needed a lot of help.
Striking and polishing is the part of what I do that I enjoy the least. It’s dirty and makes my hands ache.
Here is a “during” pic with 95% of the pits removed, in the white, finally ready to start the process. I measured periodically, and this 2frame had plenty of thickness.
Have patience, and I will have “after” pics in a couple months.

It's hard to believe those are the same barrels Breck. Nice work!!

Almost in tears I am so happy. :rotf: Thank you so much for posting this and the beautiful job you are doing. Glad I got the gun back from my brother in-law. Remember it as my dad's in the 50s. But never saw him use it.
