Maine hunt with a 16G Trojan

We had the best hunt ever!! Hunted Maine for 3 days, flushed 130 ruffs, 4 spruce grouse and 10 mudbats. Total 144 flushes. My buddy and I limited out every day. Day one was a day for the ages. I was fortunate to kill 4 grouse with three shots!! Four were by a puddle and when they flushed two flushed right next to each other and, well, the rest is history!! I took two guns on the trip and after day one decided to stick with the Parker Trojan 16g and that was a good decision. :) We would have hunted another day but his truck broke a shock in the rear so we felt discretion was the better decision and limped out and home safely. BTW, don't ask where we were. If you want to take me to your morel hot spots we can work something out. :corn:

Great hunting! I enjoy my Trojans as much as any Parker in the closet.

Here are some quick pics of moose from the trip. All done with the iPhone so thats as zommed in as I could get and they were not very far away.

Reports of good grouse numbers for a few years now up there on the paper company lands.

Should have stopped at Porter's in Greenville to replace that broken shock.

I blew the transmission in my GMC jut 8 miles north of Greenville at 11:30 PM on a Friday night.
They towed me in and the tow truck driver lent me his own personal GMC so I could continue my salmon trip up to the West Branch of the Penobscot. When we came out on Tuesday I only had to wait an hour or so for it to be done. Then had a remanufactured tranny shipped up from Portland and it arrived at noon on Monday. Great people those Mainers!!!

We were supposed to contact them but nobody answered and they are closed Saturdays.

Mike

How did the pups do? They must have had a good number of productives.

edgarspencer 10-11-2020 07:50 PM

I know exactly where you were. I recognized that Spruce tree behind you!

Callie did great for her first time on grouse and in the big woods. Productive points, backing Belle, pinning birds and retrieving all beyond what I expected. Dale’s Draht, Belle, is 9 and was a monster. It wasn’t her first rodeo and she helped educate Callie. To say I am happy with her performance would be an understatement!!

That is the most widely recognized spruce tree in Maine!! 😂😂😂

Dean Romig 10-11-2020 10:21 PM

Mike’s right. If you could look on the back side of that tree you’ll see where I carved my initials into the trunk 11 years ago.

Man...If I could find the tree George Washington carved his initials in I could buy a Invincible! (-:

Boy, that trip is going to be hard to beat Mike. Looks like all the stars lined up for a perfect trip except for the broken shock. Bummer man. You did that Trojan proud. Of course if you had had a couple of smallbore Foxes in the back with their svelte frames the shock would have held till you got back to civilization. Just saying.

Harold Lee Pickens 10-12-2020 12:05 PM

Little did you know that I stuck a GPS tracker on your truck during the big SXS shoot in July. Send me your Trojan in a plain unmarked case, or I will post your hunting where abouts on FaceBook where it will go viral:)

Mike Koneski 10-12-2020 04:40 PM

BWAHAHAHAHA!! Harold, we didn’t take my truck!

Ed Norman 10-12-2020 08:56 PM

congratulations Mike,
great pictures, and great bird numbers, I bet you are so proud of those dogs. Thanks for sharing those pictures.

Mike in the beginning of your thread you said something about showing you someone's favorite morel hot spot? If I can figure out how to download a couple of pictures, my house is in the background, I learned to grow my own morels:) I might have to head out there someday and I'll show you how to grow your own:)

Have them color case harden it in the bone charcoal method before putting it in Mike.

That would be awesome Ed!! We have some here but most years they are few and far between. We cut the stems, put them in mesh bags so spores can hit the ground too.

Mike Koneski 10-29-2020 07:50 PM

Dean, maybe Turnbull would be interested?
