Fox Sterlingworth 20 ga.

Is it possible to get the info on this gun at a fox website like you can on parker shotguns. Going to look it over tomorrow and make my decision on purchase. Where is the grade marked on a fox and if it has ejectors will it be followed by a E. ser. no. is in 263000 range so i take it was a 1931 yr. Have a great day. Thomas L. Benson Sr..

Sterlingworth is the "grade" its the base model. same box as any grade but less finish work and only border engraving- it should say Sterlingworth on the side of the box, Ejectors are a nice extra in that gun
you will find some marked Philadelphia, and others as Utica after Savage bought them out around 1929

Rick: Thanks for your reply. This gun is supposed to have engraving with birds on each side. ivory bead and red butt pad. Thomas L. Benson Sr.

the border engraving on a Sterlingworth is a basic zigzag pattern, with the word Sterlingworth on the side. Birds on factory engraving start well up the scale of grades, but could have been added.

The serial number and "birds engraved" are two conflicting features. Tell us more when you see the gun. Ejectors will be identified by the feature itself, not by a marking.

Bill: You just never know till you get there. I will try to take some pictures just in case that i'm not interested maybe someone else will be. Have a great day. Thomas L. Benson Sr.

Birds on a Fox usually mean a graded gun. If you join their Forum, you get one free look-up per year

Just got back from my trip to see fox shotgun. It is just what you described .It isn't what was told to me by the fella. It was a nice drive so not all day was lost. It would make a great little bird gun for youngster or lady because l.o.p. was fairly short. price was 1100.00. Have a great day. Thomas L. Benson Sr.

Bill Murphy 12-31-2010 06:30 PM

Hold on just a second. "What we described" is a gun without engraving if the serial number is as posted, or a higher grade if birds are engraved at the factory. Which is it? We are trying to help and I, for one, think that a 20 gauge Fox of either graded or Sterlingworth configuration is probably worth $1100.00. Let us know what you really found.

Rick Losey 12-31-2010 06:31 PM

so - it was a 20 bore Utica Sterlingworth - maybe not right for you - but at $1100 -will be a good buy for someone

Thomas L. Benson Sr. 12-31-2010 08:16 PM

Looks to be a deluxe because it has ivory bead and red but pad. If you are interested please send me a personal message and i will hook you up with the pond shop that has it. I talked to the owner of the gun and he was asking 1600.00 but it can be bought for 1100.00. Have a great day Thomas L. Benson Sr.

Always alot of confusion around fox shotguns because back in the 50s and 60s Savage marketed a "Fox" double that was not mechanicly related to the old A H fox guns. these are often confused with sterlingworths and some had some machine engraving on the sides but were a production line gun which are not near the quality of a real Philidelphia Fox or even the early Utica Foxes.

Dave Suponski 07-14-2011 08:16 PM

Brent,I think you are refering to the Fox Model B

Brent Francis 07-14-2011 10:43 PM

Thats it

yes fox model B thats what came to mind when they were discussing a sterlingworth with birds engraved on it. Ive seen Model Bs with engraving like that but not a sterlingworth.
