Decarbonized steel barrels
Anyone shoot a hammer with decarbonized steel barrels, if so what do you use?
|
I have shot mine with RST.
|
What loads did you use?
|
Just their 1 oz loads. 2 1/2 obviously.
What is the MWT of yours? Mine is pretty stout, but I don't remember the exact specs offhand |
I have shot one before. I think it was with rst. It may have been with my hand loads. I cant remember.
|
I was thinking about picking the one up in the for sale section, I've always wanted one, but are hard to find.
|
I just shoot off the shelf low brass shells....these guns steel is as stout as Damascus....this is a good price on the gun listed.....charlie

Pages 503 & 504 of "The Parker Story" state that Parker changed the name from "Decarbonized" to "Plain Steel" as Remington was using the name "Decarbonized" on their newly introduced Model 1873 & 1875/1876 Hammer Lifter doubles. 889 Parker guns were made with the Decarbonized Steel barrel mark.
Gary Carmichael's early back action Lifter http://pic20.picturetrail.com:80/VOL.../411207777.jpg Decarbonized tensile strength is a bit more than pattern welded barrel steel and about the same as AISI 1018 Low Carbon (Mild) Steel. Winchester Standard Ordnance decarbonized steel was "cold rolled" to a slightly higher tensile strength. |

Here is mine. Mills and I just about got a turkey with it, but it never got close enough
|
Mills, That's a nice looking Parker .
|
Wow - That’s a real beauty Mills!

I do take it easy in mine, but have enjoyed shooting an early Parker with decarbonized steel barrels. I have shot light smokeless reloads and RST ultralights that were 3/4 oz. And I have shot a square loads of black powder 2 1/2 ff and 1oz.
This is Parker#171 shooting clays pretty well with black powder shells(posted previously in a different thread): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKlsXZeBemQ Don't let the perceived lower quality of decarbonized barrels stop you from getting a great Parker :) |
Cool video Jay!

A well-known and respected gunsmith member here had mine at the Southern a few years ago for a hammer gun display. I was admiring it and he mentioned it was for sale and named a very reasonable price. He also said it was safe to shoot and he had shot it with RST 1 oz. That was an easy and quick buying decision.
