The End Of A Sweet Run

My oldest setter (14.5 yeas old) passed away today. We hunted grouse together in 5 states so we have been on a long road together. There is a hollow spot in my life tonight. Sometimes life just sucks.

Marty Kohler 07-27-2020 10:18 PM

So very sorry Gary....

Jim DiSpagno 07-28-2020 12:06 AM

Yes Gary the empty feeling sucks but those fond memories makes the heart warm when we really need it. My condolences my friend. Jim

Phillip Carr 07-28-2020 12:21 AM

I know the feeling all so well. I’m sorry for your loss.

Brett Hoop 07-28-2020 01:47 AM

Gary

You said it all in the word “together “. We lose a bit of ourselves. Whoever came up with the phrase “Man’s best friend “ it the the nail on the head. Ole Grouse Hunters, tend to only speak freely to their dogs. Find a pup that gives you their eyes and start the conversation.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. :(

Garry L Gordon 07-28-2020 06:48 AM

Gary,

Our Gordon, Cedar, is in her last days, succumbing to cancer at 9 years. I could not have more empathy for you. I don't think there is anything to say that lessens the pain, but as you have read in the posts already made, there are folks who care deeply about your loss, and all of us who have given our hearts to a dog share that loss. So hard to lose that friend, but so rich are we who have had that close bond. There is absolutely nothing like the relationship between a hunter and his/her companion.

I hope your pain is short lived and that the good memories burn brightly in the days ahead.

Dean Romig 07-28-2020 06:50 AM

We, who’s hearts are owned by these wonderful dogs, dread these days.

Very sorry for yours.

so sorry to hear that

Ted Hicks 07-28-2020 08:03 AM

Sad news, my condolences.

Randy G Roberts 07-28-2020 08:06 AM

So sorry for your loss Gary.

James Rhodenizer 07-28-2020 09:02 AM

My heart goes out to you on this day. The bond we have with our dogs exceeds understanding sometimes. The memories we have of the puppy years, the middle years that made you feel proud, and the honor of caring for them in the last years, have to sustain us. Gene Hill's quote, the best place to bury a dog is in your heart, is so true.

Timothy Salgado 07-28-2020 10:49 AM

Sorry for you loss.

Mike Poindexter 07-28-2020 11:59 AM

I still get teary twinges from the loss of my 11 yr. golden in December. My consolation is that we'll all be together in the by and by. So sorry for your loss.

Steve Kleist 07-28-2020 03:46 PM

Gary,
Dogs are missed as much as they are loved. You have been blessed with wonderful memories. Keep them close.

todd allen 07-29-2020 01:52 PM

It's sad to hear of when one of these magnificent companions crosses over the bridge.

Robert Rambler 07-29-2020 09:03 PM

Sorry for your lose Gary. The heartache will fade with time. The memories will last forever.

edgarspencer 07-30-2020 07:17 AM

I know that painful feeling all too well, so I too share your sorrow.

Gary Laudermilch 07-30-2020 09:27 AM

Thanks to all for your support. Right now I am concerned about his nephew Jake that is 7 years old. He has been moping around and not eating. I took him for a short woodcock run yesterday in the hope it would breathe some life back into him. I think it did, for both of us.

Dennis E. Jones 08-02-2020 09:46 AM

The loss of a close friend be they human or canine leaves a hole in one's heart that nothing can repair. One can only savor the memories, dry the tears and appreciate the friends that are still with us.

Matt Valinsky 08-09-2020 04:25 PM

Gary, I've been away from the forum for awhile and just learned of your loss, so sorry.

Ed Norman 08-28-2020 08:53 PM

Gary,
I have also been "absent" on the forum for a while, I am very sorry to hear about your loss. There are some fine dog owners out there, that give their pets a great life, and you are one of them. I hope the pain lessens and the fond memories endure.

William Woods 09-08-2020 09:32 AM

Gary,

I had my first litter in 1983, several since. I realize that they are not going to be with us forever, but losing them has never gotten easier no matter how many I have lost. Condolences on your loss. The more we love them the harder it is to see them go.
