These fellows and usually a lot more been coming out here and hunting a long time they are kin to my dads good friend so they get to hunt are land. Stan Kevins dad stoped in to visit dad on a hunt a few weeks back and I mentioned i'd like to get me a dog. So one evening Jamie calls me and says they have a dog for me I thought it was a good deal. Well they brought Sam out and hunted last weekend.Attachment 6235

And my two helpers that always go hunting with me Sam's first hunt. Best to all ch So if I can figure out how to put pictures on the computer with the help of others anybody can so I'll be wating for some pictures to look at from you.

Jack Cronkhite 12-20-2010 09:22 PM

Calvin: Sam looks like a nice pup. Lots of fun ahead. Looks like a good time had by all. While you are figuring out pictures, I'll share one image, inspired by Jamie's upland gear. The image is from a few years back. I retired them this year, after 14 seasons. Jamie must hunt some high cover :)

Cheers,
Jack

My guess would be those tears are from crossing barbwire fences. They always seem to like to grab a person. I'd say you got those pants bucked out! Many a hunt in them. How you gettin along with the medication you got to take? best ch

I think the boy sitting on the tailgate got hung on barbed wire a few times. I expect his apparatus is none the worse for wear or he probably would have quit this game long ago.

Here's a shot of my 4 year-old Filson Tin Cloth Chaps in 2009.... they're much more tattered after the 2010 season but not ready for retirement yet. I'm kind of a skinflint Yankee and try not to waste anything or throw anything out before its time. Kathy calls me a hoarder but I don't think that's very kind....

Jack Cronkhite 12-20-2010 10:11 PM

The joys of barbed wire. What I really dislike is pushing down that top strand, hiking one leg over and finding that you were on the high side and your foot doesn't find the ground on the other side before the top wire finds you. As far as medication goes, we have found the right dose and doc talks like it will be needed for at least a year. I find small scratches look like small wounds in a few minutes. Re-learning how to handle ordinary life and didn't realize how often a guy gets a nick or scratch.
Cheers,
Jack

calvin humburg 12-21-2010 06:59 AM

Hes got kids:) I think thats why they shortened the barbs on the wire back in the day. I'd say there just right, the pants. I like the hammer gun a nice ol honest gun I'd like to have one with a skelaton buttplate got SBP on the brain. I just wish I had some guys to hunt with that carried classic doubles. Sure miss Charlie. Don't get me wrong I really like hunting with thoes guys and there shot guns were probaply what I'd have if my brain didn't have Parkeritice. The action on there berettas sounded almost as good as a Parker when you close it. Maybe I'll let ol Kevin shoot mine next time and it will infect him. best ch

Calvin, enjoy your new hunting partner. They enrich our lives, they love us unconditionally and they add so much enjoyment to game bird hunting. Mine love to get in the truck with me for any and all errands and split a hamburger. I've been blessed with some good dogs and companions and greatly saddened when I lose them.

I see your new dog is a pointer. My old Shortstop is a pointer, doing less and hurting more and I've only been able to hunt him a little this fall. But I have a young setter who brings joy every day and a grrrrr when she digs up the flowers.

Dean my wife Vickie accuses me of the same thing..They just don't get "it" Eric

Economy getting any better up in Michigan, Eric? Thinking of you fellows at Christmas and I know its not easy up there with the long winter and difficult times.

Eric Eis 12-21-2010 02:41 PM

Thanks for asking Bruce and no it has not gotten any better but on the up side we are sending Jennifer a packing (our Governor) in Jan, thank "God", see did a wonderful job of putting us in the basement of this economy. Eric

Dean,
My wife doesn't understand the character these well worn garments take on either. I don't often have new pants, vests, shirts, and caps as the well worn ones just seem to feel better after they are broken in and a little frayed and frazzled with the normal tears that come with time. The pockets in the pants usually wear out first, and then my seamstress skills come out, then the straddle about the time my pockets wear out again. By the time it's all worn out I'm just getting to like them.
Mike

Dean Romig 12-21-2010 08:43 PM

You nailed it Mike. Now why can't the outdoor apparel manufacturers make something like this. They're really missing the boat. No holes understand, just well broken-in and comfy.

Dave Suponski 12-21-2010 08:44 PM

Ya..but there ain't nothin quite like doin it yourself.....Memory's

Dean Romig 12-21-2010 08:51 PM

You're right Dave. Tattered chaps and boots that look like they were gone over with a coarse belt sander along with forarms and sleeves that look like you tried to break up a cat fight are testamonials to the true, hard-core upland shooter. A "badge" so to speak.

Badges? We don' need no stinkin' badges!!

Dave Suponski 12-21-2010 09:05 PM

I'm havin a hard time typing here my hands are full of cookies......

Fred Preston 12-21-2010 09:29 PM

That Sam is a good looking, big eared, Pointer Calvin. He'll keep you all in good shape keeping up with him. I'm kinda partial to that breed.

Fred

The "stinkin' badges" end up here. I must go there again, as many posts along that fence line have a boot. Not sure why I didn't shoot the whole line. Maybe just to have a good excuse to wander over that way again. Many, many roosters over the years came from this area to our table. And that is how I have always hunted - on foot. Vehicle is parked and I'll hike for hours, unless I shoot a limit in the first bit of cover - just dreamin'
Cheers,
Jack
Found another day, same spot - very heavy morning frost.

When we were relatively newly wed, Kay did me a favor and washed all the gear cause it looked a little dirty after a day afield. She treats me well :)
Jack

Dean Romig 12-21-2010 09:53 PM

There goes the 'patina'. To remove patina, however well-intended, diminishes value.

I noticed you said when you were "newly wed." what about now....:rotf: Eric

Jack Cronkhite 12-22-2010 12:02 AM

Eric: Well, we are into our 40th year of marriage plus a 3 year courtship ahead of that and pretty much together since the day we met and she still treats me well. It's a mystery, but a happy mystery for me. That said, she doesn't wash huntin' gear anymore or clean the guns or the birds. And even though I got her a nice .410/22 during the courtship phase, she has yet to use it. I guess I learned not everyone goes huntin'.
Cheers,
Jack

Bill Murphy 12-23-2010 01:05 PM

It's so hard to get those "Ear Shots" with the camera even though our pointers seem to be ears up about ninety percent of the time.

calvin humburg 12-23-2010 01:12 PM

Jett took it by prue accident. Never hurts to have a little luck

Dean Romig 12-23-2010 02:02 PM

When I was a boy we had a black Water Spaniel with long ears like a Springer has. When he would run through our fields in search of pheasants all we could really see was his head with his long black ears flapping up and down and he looked just like a crow flying low over the field.

Gerald McPherson 12-26-2010 11:40 AM

That pup looks like a dog I had years ago. Spanky Jr. He was one tough hard hunting dog. But so was his dad and mother. Good memories. Thanks. Gerald.
