Grouse Hunting - Gunning with the Old Pats Society

The COVID - 19 virus self quarantine and work from home status has given me the opportunity to read Grouse Hunting - Gunning with the Old Pats Society by Art Wheaton again. Each chapter of the book presents and unique and interesting story. Art's writing style makes me feel as if I am sitting at the table after dinner hearing these stories for the first time. If you do not have a copy of this book or have not read it recently I would highly recommend you pick up this book a read for a wonderful experience.

And all wearing stranglers. Don't see that in the woods too often

Thanks for the identifications Art - I was thinking of taking a stab at it but I really only recognized a bit more than half of them.

Wow, 8 Parker 28ga guns and 5 with straight grips. Looks like 7 VH's and a DH ? Sure don't see a group of 28's like that every day. Thanks for posting Dean.

James L. Martin 04-30-2020 03:53 PM

Also just saw that every straight grip has a single trigger.

Dean Romig 04-30-2020 04:07 PM

And all beavertails too. Probably all Skeet guns.

One of those straight grip guns looks like a GH.

To me it looks like #2, 7 and 8 have splinter forends and double triggers. Regardless IMHO the 28 is the ultimate birdgun.

Chuck Bishop 04-30-2020 07:04 PM

I've got my signed copy. I even know some of those old guys:rotf:

Right, and those three have pistol grips too.

Now that would be a nice rack of Parkers!

Oh my! What a collection of guns. In my mind they are all 30" + guns, after all you can't see the end of the barrels to tell how long they are. Don't even comment, just let me dream.

Dean Romig 05-01-2020 08:13 PM

:biglaugh:... Randy - they’re woodcock guns with the occasional grouse to flavor the bag.

I knew someone would ruin it for me but I didn't think it would be you Dean. :)

Dean Romig 05-01-2020 09:22 PM

...sorry Randy.

But can you imagine swinging a svelte little 28 with a straight grip, beavertail and 32” barrels on dove speedsters jinking along at 50 mph?

No, he wants a 34"!

My Dad never left the house to go bird hunting with Ruffed Grouse his English setter without a tie on. God rest his soul
