Looking for a New 20ga. Recipe
My present, and long time favorite 20ga. load is dying a slow death from starvation. Starving for PB, that is.
Since I have lots of Chedite hulls, and lots of SG20S, and SG20M, I am looking for a recipe using those wads and hulls. Preference is for for SG20S in 2 1/2" loads with 7/8oz, and SG20M in 2 3/4". I have been offered a quantity of Alliant 20/28, so a recommended powder charge is what I'm after, to achieve under 9K psi. |
Edgar, I love 20/28 for both 3/4 and 7/8 oz loads--but I use AA and Gun Club hulls. I checked the Alliant site , but couldn't find any loads with cheddite hulls listed. I also have downloaded from the old Yahoo 16 ga reloading site, the 20 ga spreadsheets, but they don't list any loads with cheddite hulls and 20/28, they do have some with Federal hulls which are also straight walled like the cheddite. I was using Unique in 20 ga cheddite.
Hope you are doing well, was really looking forward to seeing you at Hausmann's this summer but that is not looking promising under the current situation. BTW, the 20/28 loads I use are under 8000 psi |
PB has completely vanished from my part of the planet. I'm looking for possible loads for 2 1/2" 20ga. using either Universal or International Clays and SG20 wads, got lots of both. I've had real good success feeding my short 16s International and would sure like to get it working with a mild (under 8K) +/-1150 fps 7/8 oz load for the 20s. I'm using Cheddite hulls. Has anyone any experience in this direction?

I use one piece AA hulls with a Win 209 primer, Winchester Double A wads, 14 grains of 20/28 powder and 7/8 oz. of shot. I use this load in my newer steel barreled Trojan and VH but use the same load but with 13.3 grains of 20/28 in my older Damascus DH 20.

Couldn't find any loads using the SG20 wad listed in my 20 ga spreadsheets.
I use Claybuster 1078 and 1075--they are Win AA clones and a bag of 500 is ususally around $10. I have used this load with Unique: Ched 2 1/2"/ win or ched 209 primer/ Unique 16gr/CB1078/ 1186fps@ 7200 psi. I have used this load in 2 3/4" cheddite, but may fit in a 2 1/2"--definitely will if dropped to 3/4 oz load: Universal 17gr/ Win or ched 209 primer/CB 1078/ 1197 fps/ 7800 psi |
Here's a load I have used and recoil was mild.I have not had it tested.Im sure I found this listed here in the reloading forum.New Fiocchi hulls cut to 2 1/2 inch,16 grs.Universal,SG20M wad,8 fold crimp. It was listed as having 8500 PSI,and 1200 FPS.Another load with same hull and 3/4 oz.of shot,14 grs.20/28,CB1075 wad,8 fold crimp, listed as having 7500 PSI,at 1200 FPS.I would think you could sub a Cheddite hull and primer as both are straight walled hulls and very similar.Do this at your own risk as I have not had these tested. The load with 20/28 was a little smoky. The load with Universal was clean. These were fired in a Trojan with steel barrels.

Just made a correction.Didnt have the grains listed for the 20/28.

[QUOTE=Dean Romig;299644]I use one piece AA hulls with a Win 209 primer, Winchester Double A wads, 14 grains of 20/28 powder and 7/8 oz. of shot. I use this load in my newer steel barreled Trojan and VH but use the same load but with 13.3 grains of 20/28 in my older Damascus
Dean, do you know the psi/fps on this? I'd like to try it using 3/4 ounce of shot. Thx Chris |
Hey Chris, in Win AA With W209 primer and CB1075 wad-(chartruse):3/4 oz
14.5 gr 20/28 1200 fps @ 7200 psi 15.5 gr 20/28 1250 fps @ 7900 psi So 13.3 gr 20/28 should be very mild, and I'm guessing around 1100 fps and in the 6000's psi. range I usually load the 14.5 gr load for both my steel and damascus 20's. It is a nice load. |
Hey, thanks Harold, I have all the components! I'll play with the powder amount....
|
Thanks Harold - I'm away from my reloading bench right now and the recipes I have.
Those certainly do look like the ones I use. . |
I use the same loads Dean does 20/28 in AA Hulls. Lighter charges for my Grandson heavier for me.
Having said that also load 3/4 oz & Green Dot in Gun Club Hulls for a 20 G Beretta 391 Sporting. Different hulls keep the auto loaders shells separated . Lot more pressure with Green Dot. Gas operated auto needs pressure two Parker Trojans don’t. All considered it’s hard to beat 20/28 in the 20G William |
After a few boxes, I’m satisfied I’ve found my load. Cheddite 2.5”, 14.5 grains 20/28, SG20L wad, 3/4 Oz , WIN209, 6 point crimp.

I sent some test loads out to Tom Armbrust a couple weeks ago that are similar to what you've loaded above and you and the other guys may be interested in how they performed. * 2 3/4" Remington Gun Club hull, 0.70 ounces of #8's, Rem STS209 primer, 14.3 grains of 20/28 using a CB1075-20 wad: 1244 fps, 8520 psi average. (0.70 ounces is about 21 BB's shy of 0.750 ounces of #8 shot.) * I also sent him some 0.7 ounce #8 loads in RST 2 1/2" hulls as follows: Win 209 primer; 14.3 gns of 20/20 in that CB1075-20 wad = 1224 fps, 7680 psi, average. I also sent him some of my 20 gauge 1/2 ounce loads in case anyone is interested in the light stuff. * 20 gauge, 2 3/4" Rem Gun Club hull, 1/2 oz #8's, Rem 209 primer, 12.8 gns of 20/28 in a CB1075-20 wad with a 0.510"dia x 0.140" thick card wad in the bottom = 1183 fps, 4140 psi, avg. * 20 ga. 2 1/2" RST hull, 1/2 oz #8's, Win 209 primer, 12.8 gns 20/28, CB1075-20 wad with that 0.510 " card wad in the bottom = 1138 fps, 4580 psi, avg. (I get those 0.510" x 0.140" card wads from Craig Smith, Circle Fly Wads.) For anyone interested in loading some light 1/2 ounce 12's in 2 3/4 and 2 1/2 inch hulls, I've had those tested too. I've been loading and shooting them for more than 5 years. Light and Sweet. Around 1300+ fps and 5000 psi average. PM me or maybe start a new thread. |
