Remington Era 1/2 Frames

Gentlemen ,I was at a Local Gun Show last weekend and was discussing Parker guns with an Elderly Gentleman who has been a collector of Parker's and Winchesters for many years ! The Remington 1/2 Frame Guns came up in our conversation and he mentioned some time ago he seemed to remember a Serial Number List that was distributed by the PGCA listing all the 1/2 Frame Parker's known to date ! He even said at one time he thought he had the list , does anyone remember such a list ,how it was formed and documented or just any thing at all about it at all ,this was totally new information to me ! Thank You ahead of time for any replies to my inquiry !

Mills Morrison 01-17-2020 06:05 PM

Yes, it was a few issues ago.

Russ Jackson 01-17-2020 06:16 PM

Was it in PP's ??? I must have missed it , he had said it was years ago , the list I am referring to .

I do remember it - I'll check my Digital Archive of Past Issues of Parker Pages (Available exclusively to PGCA Members for only $50.)

It was compiled by Craig Reynolds and published in Issue 4 of the 2017 volume.

Here is the list of 1/2 Frame Parkers compiled for Parker Pages by Craig Reynolds.

Dean ,those are S&F Sold Guns but they don't say they are 1/2 Frame guns ! Do you remember such a list by any chance ? Since Bob Beach has retired ,Griffin and Howe hasn't replaced him with any one to do letters !

Dean Romig 01-17-2020 06:47 PM

What's S&F ??

The S is just too close to the A on my Keyboard :rotf:! Thanks Dean !!!!

Yes, Craig was personally tracking the 1/2 frame for a while. And published his findings in that PP article.

Please note that any mention of serial 226709 as a “prototype 1/2 frame” is not accurate. It is a prototype, but not a 1/2 frame.

Dean Romig 01-18-2020 09:24 AM

What IS 226709 a prototype for?

Please refer to my EXTENSIVE writings in both DGJ and PP from 2013 for details.

It was a prototype built buy James Hayes for many different purposes. It was essentially the direction Parker guns would have taken if it were not for the Depression and sale of the company. It is a 1-1/2 frame gun by the way.

I personally own Hayes earlier prototype version for 226709. A PP article is intended on it specifically. If I can ever find the time.
I will never again write anything for DGJ. Any of my efforts will be focused on PP.

Another important thing to remind people of is that the 1/2 frame was developed by Meriden around 1930. And the frames were actually produced by them as well. But no guns were built on them until after Remington ownership of Parker.

So, you will not find any examples of Meriden built 1/2 frame guns. Very few examples have surfaced that would appear to be earlier 1/2 frame guns, but they are actually original 1 frame 16g guns that were rebarreled with 1/2 frame 12g barrels by Remington at a later date.

It is commonly accepted that Remington never actually made any Parker frames in Ilion. They were just using up existing Meriden inventory.

I actually own a set of new old stock unfitted 1/2 frame barrels.

Here is a 1/2 frame, 12 bore, 26', V grade with extractors, to add to the list---s/n 240331. I currently have a chance to purchase, the stock finish is ROUGH.

Oh ya---I will be in Maine next week and I will check the Remington prints to verify my earlier statement concerning half frames on one frame actions.

Thanks for the info on the 1/2 frame. I didn’t have a record of that gun. To date that makes a total of 81 1/2 frames that I have recorded, 20 of which were sold by A&F. It sounds like a grouse hunter ordered it. Have you seen it yet?

Mills Morrison 01-29-2020 03:21 PM

I would like to get a GH 1/2 frame one day. There was one on GI a few years ago that would have been perfect. I thought the price was a bit strong, but it went quickly

Dean Romig 01-29-2020 06:00 PM

I saw a nice GHE on the 1/2 frame at the Southern in one of the big tents probably 12 years or so ago with a $13+K price tag on it....

.

Mills Morrison 01-29-2020 07:34 PM

Well the one I saw was less than that at least

Dean Romig 01-29-2020 08:18 PM

That was way back when 1/2 frames really drew a premium... back when old sxs’s drew higher prices.

I just discovered (uncovered in my stacks of stuff) lots of threads I had printed from the forum a number of years ago, this post from Austin Hogan and a reply post by Robin Lewis.

Some time ago, we discussed the omissions in the chart above. There are many additions to that chart, mostly pertaining to pre-Remington guns, that we listed in old posts. Thanks, Dean.

We finally know where he gets all this stuff.:rotf:

Bill Murphy 03-23-2020 06:02 PM

Patrick makes good A&F jokes, but he is too young to have ever been there. I spent some memorable days on the seventh floor of the New York store in the late fifties.

allen newell 03-26-2020 06:58 PM

A&F was my go to place when I was at Rutgers in the late 60's. Just loved that place.

Russell E. Cleary 03-28-2020 11:18 PM

During Winter school vacation in 1961 our family made a trip down to New York City to see some of the sights. Many of the best-known ones were dispensed with.

We did take in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral; but far more engaging and memorable for me of this pilgrimage was our visiting Abercrombie & Fitch.

It is the only instance I know of the head of a household taking family vacation photos of the inside of a department store.

You know you could post those pictures for those of us who never saw it:corn:

I own a 1/2 frame 12 ga vhe Meriden stamped bbl 219532 . Not Remington but I believe dates to 1928 Update being a novice as far as Parker’s go when I reread the post I realized that I did not actually have a 1/2 frame gun but a 1 1/2 frame gun knowledge comes slowly sometimes. This is a great site .

Dean Romig 03-29-2020 06:54 PM

Don, can you post a picture of the lug where it is stamped 1/2 ?

.

Bill Murphy 03-29-2020 07:11 PM

Yup, we want to see the barrel lug marking and please give us the distance between firing pin holes. What does the Serialization Book say about 219532, if it is listed? If it is a rebarrel, it could be a 12, 16, or less likely a 20. Thanks.

I just saw 240378 today. Well used. Unfortunately priced high

Jeff Kuss 08-15-2022 10:39 AM

My new to me 1/2 frame gun weighs 10 oz more than my 1 frame 12 ga. 7 oz of that is in the beavertail forend. The serial # is on the list.

Dean Romig 08-15-2022 01:41 PM

Jeff, is that 7 ounces the difference between a splinter forend and the beavertail, or is it the total weight of the beavertail?

.

Jeff Kuss 08-15-2022 01:52 PM

The difference between the two.

Bill Murphy 08-15-2022 03:08 PM

Mills, that is a sweet looking 1/2 frame and a sweet looking rack of Parkers. What do you consider expensive?

Mills Morrison 08-15-2022 04:14 PM

$8 grand, if memory serves me correctly

Dean Romig 08-15-2022 04:32 PM

I think they're putting a pretty stiff premium on a 1/2 frame. What other special features does it have?

.

Mills Morrison 08-15-2022 04:35 PM

None that I could see. Maybe the red front bead.

Bill Murphy 08-15-2022 06:19 PM

Thanks for the heads up, Mills.

Chuck Bishop 08-15-2022 06:42 PM

I personally like high premiums on 1/2 frames!
