My Star

1 Attachment(s)
This evening my Star, Llewellin Setter, underwent emergency surgery for a blockage in his intestine, at the Massachusetts Emergency Hospital just north of Boston. The pre-surgery talk was centered around septic problems and possibly having to remove intestine due to the bunching of the intestine as the blockage seemed to be a string like material. One quote was if there is damage to the intestine he has a 50% chance of survival. Just go a call from the surgeon who said the surgery went well, they only had to remove just over an inch of intestine, and he should be on the road to recovery. Please say a little prayer for us for a good recovery.

Hang in there Stevie and a speedy recovery for Star.

Dave Tatman 09-29-2019 09:54 PM

You got it, Steve. Praying for Star now for a full recovery. Hang in there.

Dave

Good luck Star!

Daryl Corona 09-30-2019 07:32 AM

Prayers for both of you. As Shawn W. says "God made bird dogs tuff".

Brett Hoop 09-30-2019 09:56 AM

Steve,

Sure thing, Prayers for your Star!

Mills Morrison 09-30-2019 10:06 AM

Hope the recovery goes well

We had a dog that had a similar surgery...and lived to the ripe, old age of 14. Here's hoping you and Star have even more years together.

Dean Romig 09-30-2019 10:18 AM

Yup, bird dogs are tough but they seem to eat anything and for no good reason.

I’m wishing for a speedy recovery!

My nephew is a vet there in Woburn.

Dear that is where Star is

Timothy Salgado 09-30-2019 10:55 AM

Prayers up for you and Star. Our English Cocker Scout had the same type of surgery when he was a pup and recovered well without any issues. I hope Star has a good recovery and outcome.

Take Care,
Tim

I do not want to jinx this, but just talked with the hospital. Everything doing fine. If all still goes well may come home as early as tomorrow:)

If I have learned anything from this is that you need to be an advocate for your dog. I was and the surgeon told me last night after surgery that thank goodness I brought him in yesterday, for today may have been to late. I kept pushing the Vets in NH that he was not right and needed more attention and tests. They cannot advocate for themselves, they need us to do that.

Daryl Corona 09-30-2019 05:25 PM

I could'nt agree more Steve. You know your dogs and their daily routine and when something is out of kilter for more than 24hrs. you need to react. Things happen so much more rapidly with dogs and the sooner the better. Still praying.

Garry L Gordon 09-30-2019 05:47 PM

If only they could talk to us, but they can't...so we must speak on their behalf. Good for you!

Stephen Hodges 09-30-2019 07:27 PM

Absolutely. This brings up the conversation of pet health insurance. I have it on both of my dogs. Will pay 80% of each bill up to $10K per year and up to $50K for the life of the dog; I pay $55 per month for star. The Bill on this surgery will be $9350. Of that I will pay & $1870. Please consider taking out insurance. i use embrace insurance company.

We've already totaled more than $9K on our two dogs with cancer within the past several weeks. I keep thinking about buying insurance for our younger dog. Maybe all of this will help me decide.

I sent a message to Dr. Dana telling him that the team there made a friend of mine VERY happy.

His reply, though he was not the surgeon who worked on Star is below.

Steve,
I wish your dog a speedy recovery, and I wish your family all the best in a time like this.

Harold Lee Pickens 10-04-2019 12:57 PM

Just saw this Steve, he is a lucky dog to still be alive, thanks to your paying attention to him. I know of a couple of setters that didnt make it into the vets til it was too late.
