Letter for 31436 D TL Hammer from Morphy's
2 Attachment(s)
Here is the letter on the gun nothing special. Since it was made in 1883 the gun should incorporate all of the 1882 design changes, dolls head, large extractors, check hook, plunger firing pins. It does have shootable dimensions for me and still weights 10lbs 4 ozs. Fingers crossed I can make it into a shooter. I get as excited about buying one of these old war horse guns as I do high condition high grade guns.

Thanks Milton. Good buy in my opinion if it's a shooter. Will report back when I have the gun in hand.

There was also a 10lb 10ga PH I think it was in that same auction . Wonder if anyone here got it as well . |
Tell us the item number, Milton. I liked several Parkers in that sale, but I have something in the mail now and don't need another right now. I assume Craig's new Grade 3 is a three lug with doll's head.

Looked like a nice heavy hammerless 10 gauge , most hammerless 10s I see are in the 9lb range . It was a GH , dont know why I thought it was a PH . |

Was the PH the most common 10 ga hammerless ? I see those for sale more than any other grade . Im not familiar with all the grades yet , im planning to buy a G grade lifter but I like the PH 10s as well , im a minimalist kind of guy . |
Morphy's cashed my check a week ago but they have not shipped the gun.In the amazon world waiting 7 to 14 days for a gun is a killer.

So I received 31406. Barrels are pitted as advertised about the same as my other D #6 frame (bad but not the worst I have seen!!!) Measurements are right barrel bore .807, wall at 9" .079, min wall .041, choke .040: left bore .822, wall at 9" .079, min wall .041, choke .051.
It needs a new bolt and to be put on face at some point it is shootable as is but I want it right. The right hammer is loose but I don't have a screw driver bit thin enough to tighten, it may need some welding work. The firing pin springs are broken. I intend to give it a good cleaning and add some finish to the wood that's about it. Cool old ducker, I can't imagine how many ducks this gun has killed but I do intend to extend it's long life in the marsh. So to complete my collection of old tired duck guns, I would like to add a 5 frame D 10 gauge, they seem to weight around 12lbs. |

Bottom gun is 31406, top gun is my #6 frame 10, not a great picture.
Craig I'm not interested in a 3 frame D just because they are common. My real interest is in the big guns built on frames larger than standard. |
Craig, most of these guns do not have firing pin springs. The pins float. That pin is likely just seized up with gunk.
|
OK thanks Brian I did not realize that. A little Hoppies and they are good now. I put a .003 shim in the hinge and the gun is good to go until I get it put back on face correctly.

Update on the 4 frame D. I bought it for $1860. The hinge and bolt need to be welded and fitted, $450. From Turnbull. The hammer screws need to be replaced and engraved $110. I added timberlux to the wood to seal up the wood. So I have $2420. In the gun. Not great but OK for what it is. Putting more money into it would be a waste in my opinion. Lightly recuting the checkering and re doing the barrels would cost another $600 to $800. So then I would be i
nto the gun for 3k to 3.2k. To much in my opinion but what say you? |

The gun is something that you were looking for, and you are making it fully functional so you can enjoy it.
Given what the gun is, any further cosmetic work would not be a wise investment. |
So you've gotten the pragmatic and poetic sides of this. It will be interesting to see where you go. I don't think you can make a poor decision on that fine gun.
