Early DH

I've been looking around for typical engraving patterns for the EARLY DH guns meaning 1888-1890 .

Any sources I can avail myself ?

The ones in the grade section of this website don't appear to be the earlier style and didn't see any pictures in the two volume set under grades ,

is there a specific detail you need to see?

I like the dog on the floorplate.

If you look through the 26 pages of Who Let the Dogs out. You will find some good examples.

Here is one that doesn't quite fall in that 88-90 range. It's a 1894. I would like to have a early one with 3-dogs.

No I was just curiouse ! The DH I have at the house is well worn and the one I should have in a couple weeks I never got a real good look . Both were manufactured in 1889 .

That’s not mine just pictures I found in the dog thread . I hope the one I have coming looks half that nice !

Craig. The one I showed is 55804

The sides seem to be fairly standard but the floor engraving varies

Craig,
56568 is the gun you pictured. It belonged to Austin Hogan. It now resides in my gun safe.

I looked at a DH 10 gauge yesterday at Rock Island. It had three dogs (one on the floor plate). The setter on the side was "turned." I have one (a 12) from a year later than the Rock Island DH and it also has three dogs, but not the turned setter on the side.

Here's the floor plate from my 12.

Yes he made the post with those pics in 2010 I believe it was . Is it a 10 or a 12 ?

That happens to be the gun that got me curiouse. I already had an 1889 DH 10 that I’d gotten on Gunbroker that has really worn engraving . But the one you Mention is a little earlier serial number wise . I only think there was one DH 10 (56,235) at Rock Island and if that’s true that gun is headed to Virginia

I liked that DH at RIAC, it had some nice barrels and that unique engraving...and it was a 10! Congratulations.

I just sent off for a letter on this one !

I'm becoming quite interested to get the gun here and try and compare the engraving of this one with my DH 3 frame 10 . May be a skoosh difficult as the engraving on the 3 frame is worn a good bit . But we will see

The RIA 1889 DH 10 arrived today . Old gun actually looks better then was expecting . Most likely the barrels on this one will get a once over .

Looks like three dog night to me

Garry L Gordon 07-15-2019 11:25 PM

I thought that gun was very nice when I held it...it looks just as good as I remember.

Keep us posted on what you end up doing with it. I think those three dog Ds are extra nice.

Don’t ask me why but I have a third DH 10 on its way to me and scheduled to arrive thursday . Not an early early one but rather 1894 with the more profuse scrollwork on the action sides . Another 3 frame 30” .

Here’s the action engraving on the circa 1894 DH 10 that’s supposed to arrive here tommorrow.
