Restock of an HE SuperFox
11 Attachment(s)
The original buttstock on this HE had been pinned a few times in the head and was cut down very short. The owner of it wanted a new stock made from grade appropriate wood with the only changes to be some cast in the stock and to his required LOP with a new Hawkins pad.
A good strong and conservatively beautiful piece of circassian walnut was selected for the job. The original form and style of the stock was replicated. The factory checkering pattern reproduced on the new stock as well. The original forend was in find condition, so it was refinished and its checkering recut. All of the screws were replaced and engraved to match the originals since they were a little less than perfect. Next I have to re-blue the barrels and trigger guard before it gets put back to use this upcoming season. Great job. The stock looks perfect, but not “new”. Very appropriate

I never did get any photos of this gun posted after the barrels and guard were re-blued.
Here are a few. Barrels rust blued and trigger guard Nitre Blued. Attachment 81212 Attachment 81213 Attachment 81214 Attachment 81215 |
I'm doing the exact same job at the moment ,with the exception of upgraded wood -small world!

With Supers commanding good money as of late, I think people have no issue spending the money on them.
I too have another Super in the works right now. With much nicer wood than this one. It was custom stocked by someone else previously with a piece that should have never been put on the gun. Cross grain in the wrist. After it breaking TWICE in less than 8 years, it was time to replace it again. The owner did not care about fancy wood, but I am trying to match the forend that is on the gun which is still good. |
Brain , flawless job as always.

He is a smart guy for sure.

Attachment 81221 Attachment 81220 Likewise, Remington Arms Co. called their "standard" grip a half pistol grip. I don't know of any American gun manufacturer that catalogued a "Prince of Wales" grip, just straight, half or full pistol grip. Parker Bros. had a variation of their half-pistol grip that swelled at the bottom and collectors today refer to it as a "ball grip". I think only British makers offered a "Prince of Wales" grip. In the load of repros of English gun catalogues Cote' once sent me, some of them show it capped and some rounded grip for what they called a "Prince of Wales" Grip. I've always felt the capped full pistol grips on the Ithaca Gun Co. Flues Model doubles looked a lot like the "Prince of Wales" grips with caps in the English catalogues. |

I noticed on a Bakers I seen the grip on it also looked identical to the Fox and Remington . I wasnt sure on the terminology of the grip profile . What would the full grip look like ? I assume its the ones with more pronounced curvature of the grip area . |

Nice job Brian! Love the grain through the wrist. Couldn't be better. Perfect pc of wood for that gun.

Yes, it is. I recognized the grip oddly enough. And I matched the figure in the wood to the photo.
|
Most of the original HE-Grade Super-Fox guns with full pistol grips I have examined have a smooth grip cap, but I've seen some with the logo grip cap that appear original too.

Another Super-Fox ordered with full pistol grip and furnished with a Fox logo cap. S/n 300xx.

my HE had the logo cap also. Bobby

Bryan...Did you use a clear coat poly finish? Looks glossy....good for wet weather! Fitment looks perfect! SXS ohio
|
You confuse me with someone else whose parents did not know how to spell Brian.
The finish is timberluxe. Poly finishes belong nowhere near a vintage double. Period. |
Very nice Brian - I'm working toward a similar finish using Timberluxe on a nice little Trojan 20 I bought recently from Russ Jackson.
