Missing topic.

I had seen a recent post from a forum associate about two Parkers, as I recall, a 3 frame D, and a fairly nice old hammer gun. I was hoping to see more, better pictures, but I can't find the thread.

No wonder I couldn't find it. Must have crossed a line.

Craig Larter 03-24-2019 12:10 PM

The guy was looking for an estimate of value. I made a guess for him. Not sure what rules were broken unless I missed a later post.

todd allen 03-24-2019 12:17 PM

Yeah, I'm guessing he did something after I had seen the thread.
The forum visitors often bring some interesting topics, stories, and ideas to the table. I just wish they would spend a minute reading the rules.
I make myself nervous sometimes, because I love sipping a glass or two of something, while reading the pages here. Sometimes I have an OMG moment, hoping I didn't post anything on those evenings when the third glass got poured ; -0

It is MY opiniin, that everyone who posts “just looking for a value” is in actuality, simply looking to sell. And things end up going downhill fast.

CraigThompson 03-24-2019 02:08 PM

I see nothing wrong with asking an approx value . Regardless of what the persons reason is . I watched that post and he said nothing in the thread that seemed out of line . If “I” ask a value it’s because I wanna know if I got taken or what I should expect to pay .

Bill Holcombe 03-24-2019 03:25 PM

It happens a lot, people post asking a value and people message them offering to buy it which negates the forum rules.

Heck, when I first posted my 1st VH I bought and people asked what I paid, I got messaged by a forum member or 2 offering to buy it for more then I paid. I entirely understand not permitting the whats it worth post.

That's no different then any other forum .

Same thing happened to me on another forum I posted a few pics of the VHE 20 right after we got it and a guy bugged the heck out of me about the gun . He made an offer that I thought was over the top , I didn't accept it but I truly believe he was just blowing smoke .

But I also see nothing wrong with asking what a fair market value of such and such grade in say average condition . I would ask something like that before I went looking just to make sure what I thought was inline with the market .

There is often a lot that goes on behind the scenes that we are usually not privy to. In this particular instance, that's exactly what went on. He was attempting to conduct his own private silent auction. Fully a day before he made that post questioning value, he had offered it to a friend and a very reasonable offer was made by our friend. He then came on the forum attempting to get PM bids.

IMO, this may not be the best place for an amateur to try to off a recently purchased gun.
This is a very sophisticated group, when it comes to shotguns, and most of the guns presented are actually worth quite a bit less than the newbie thought, or even what he actually paid.
Ideally, the newbie should spend some time here first, and then go shopping.

Well I thought you had a private agenda and you did ! Just wasn’t the agenda I originally thought LOL’s !

Craig Larter 03-24-2019 05:12 PM

I spoke to the poster at length on the phone today. The poster does not own the gun. The gun has been in the original family since new, they are Canadian and the gun is in Canada. The gun is not for sale. The gun was used in the marshes on the north shore of Lake Erie, turkey point, long point etc. The fellow who made the post is advising the family on it's potential value. A local gun dealer offered the family a very low ball number which they rejected and asked the guy that made the post to do diligence and try to get a realistic value. I gave him my input based on my knowledge of the market here in the US. He was most appreciative. My motivation was helping out someone looking for input and the potential of maybe getting a shot at a gun that fits my collecting interests or passing the information on to a like minded friend in the future. I would love to see the owners sell the gun for what it's worth instead of getting shafted. That being said I can understand how the forum administrator thought it smelled bad.

Brian Dudley 03-24-2019 07:40 PM

if the gun is not for sale, then why would the family be wanting pricing in response to an offer from another dealer? Sounds like it is for sale to me.

Bill Holcombe 03-24-2019 07:44 PM

I'll wait to see it pop back up in 6 to 12 months belonging to a forum member with no mention of it coming through the forum. Won't be the first time....

I couldn't have said it any better.

And yes - I deleted that thread.

Have a nice evening,

John D.

Hi Craig - not sure I understand what you're saying. Shoot me a PM please and explain what you thought my agenda was/is.

Best, Dean
