Custom or requested weight
Were there many guns lettered as to having a requested weight? Was this a common option for higher grade guns?
|
Yes. Weight is sometimes requested, mostly on individually ordered guns.

Here's an excerpt from a Parker letter where the weight is referred to as one of the "requested specifications" along with the stock dimensions.

Most of my letters say the weight under specifications, but I have several that say "requested weight"

The only requested weight gun I have is on a 2 barrel set that when the 12 ga barrel was added it was specified that the gun weight the same with the 12 gauge barrels as it did with the original 10ga. All my other letters list a weight, but it is just listed not requested.

Awesome, thank you guys, I have a GH 2 frame that letters with a specific weight range (7 1/4 to 7 1/2) peeked my curiosity about ordered weights for customer orders. I havent weighed it yet to see where it falls. What frame size was that VH and have you weighed it yet?

Rick, I may need to recant...just shuffled through the letters I have here at the office...and only came up with one that had requested weight. I know I have a couple more, and if memory serves, they are for a VH 12, and a
VH 16. Wow, I wish I could buy a rack of these for$37.50 each today! |

Of the 18 PGCA Research letters l have ordered only two of them have “requested weight”, four of them have no weight listed but say “the stock book would contain the weight and the stock dimensions.” while the rest simply say “specified weight:...” or simply “weight:...”

One of my Parker’s has a requested weight of 6lbs, 10ozs. 124 years later it weights the same.

If the stock book is the only record I have, I list the weight shown on the letter if I can read it. If the stock book is missing but I have the entry in the order book I put down "the requested weight". Sometimes the order book will give the weight such as 7 1/2 pounds or sometimes it may say 7 to 7 1/2 pounds and if you were to weight the gun, it may be 7 pounds 4 ounces. That's why I say "requested weight". It just depends. The stock book is more accurate in that it lists the pounds and ounces such as 7 pounds, 8 ounces. There are some large orders in the order book and they don't even list the weight or stock dimensions. These large orders can be multiple pages with each page 40 S/N's. Guess that was too much data to enter. Hope this explains it.
Chuck BTW, I do the same with chokes. If I can read the pellet count in the stock book, that goes in the letter. If I can't and the order book entry show how they want it choked, than I put "the requested chokes were RH xxx, LH xxx. |
