Rock Island PH 20...
3 Attachment(s)
Got the 20 yesterday. Always apprehensive when bidding on a gun that has never been in your hands. This was listed as from the Pachmeyer Estate...and true to form it had a white line pad..(that is already removed ).. 28"...double ivory....F/F..The front bead must be a replacement, as it is much whiter than the mid bead. Is there a way to tone down the color ? Bores are like new...One screw has a ding..rest are nice. Good bit of color, even the TG is nice. My photography is not the best..obviously ! I loaned my TPS to a friend..so I don't know total production. I'm sure someone will tell me..My first Parker was a PH 20 that I bought in 1976..and, oddly..for the exact some price that I paid for this one..

Nice gun, total 20ga with twist barrels 210 , 120 with 28"
I too looked at that gun and know how difficult it is with the small amount of information they supply. I bid on a Fox with two sets of barrels and it went for double the estimated value.
I think you can pretty much disregard their estimates. All the ones I looked at seemed way low. Not sure what their strategy is with low estimates.
Mr. Martin..thanks. for the figure. Rock Island estimate was 1100-1600 on the 20.
That’s a beautiful little PH Jerry.
Please contact me when your curatorship of it is expiring. . |
Dean..Since it's not black with a 20 round mag..(my son's idea of a fine gun)..you will have first refusal !!
I tried following live the first day of the auction to see how the hammer bids compared to the estimates and was surprised that quite a few were below the low estimates. It was my first time there so I tested the waters with one bid, I could have done a bunch but but was afraid of winning more than I can handle. I'll be a little more serious about it next time.

I looked that 20 over in person, and it was very(!) nice. Congratulations and good shooting.

If the bead is truly ivory or bone, it can be toned down with a strong tea. You may need to treat it several times, but, eventually it will yellow. |
I thought I had a couple mammoth ivory sights. I let one soak all night in a mix of black tea and iodine..White as the driven snow ..still!..I'll try a few more days. Is there a place that has true ivory ? A lot of them say "ivory beads" but mine must be PVC !..j..
A gun dealer told me that he used amber shellac to age ivory beads.
I have a mammoth bead that I soaked in tea for a few days ,still white as snow, used Fiebing's leather dye a mix of burgundy and yellow. It turned out better but still not like a old ivory sight.
I put 2 more in the mix this AM. I'll see what a couple days does to them. The shellac sounds best..I'm familiar with Fiebings. I've use it to color stock finish mixes..Works great to get a darker brown if you need it..
I hope Rock Island sends my winnings out soon.
Mills..What did you end up winning ?...On the coloring of ivory ? beads..After the soaking in 50-50 mix of tea and iodine..and straight iodine...3 beads ended up with 3 different shades of color. I would not call any of them "yellowish or amber". 100% iodine colored one that matched my center bead well enough that it looks original...and it screwed right into the hole. The other 2 were lighter..but better than snow white. I have one that I know is mammoth..and I'll try the amber shellac on it..I'm guessing that some called "ivory" are really bone..

I'll report when they come and they are something worth bragging about. I have learned that the hard way. Anyway, 2 16s and a project 12
