Steel Butt Plates on VH grade guns

Did they put steel butt plates on any VH grade guns? I have a twenty gauge with a steel butt plate. It is serial numbered to the gun.

Dean Romig 09-30-2018 08:26 PM

Not as a standard feature.

The standard butt plate on the VH guns was a dog's head butt plate.

Can you show us a picture?

Is this the one that Ed Good sold on GB? Serial number was in the 157,000 range.

That's just funny.

steel buttplate

Yep, it was ED's gun.

Brian Dudley 10-01-2018 08:37 AM

You are a brave guy in buying anything from him.

See here a previous thread discussing this gun.

Now that you have the gun and know the complete serial number, you should order a letter on it, if available.

Pictures please

You might want to get that gun thoroughly checked out.

Here are a few pictures. Seems to be a solid shooter, the stock is more 1 frame size. I guess I should disassemble the receiver to check everything out. After reviewing the pictures l can see that the serial number is overstamped. I actually had intended to replace the butt plate with a reproduction DHBP. If I removed the blue on the receiver would it also remove any case that may be left? Thanks for everyone’s input

Dean Romig 10-01-2018 02:48 PM

Judging by the positions of the screw holes I believe that steel butt plate is original to the gun (if the stock is original to the gun.)

There is no blued frame out there that will have original case colors remaining if removed. Since the colors would have been removed during prep for bluing. It was all gone before the debauchery was committed. Period. The actual case hardening is likely still present, but no color.

We must be careful to never say never!!

I have a VHE with a skeleton steel butt plate and it’s sister had one as well according to its prior owner.

Remington era?

Brian Dudley 10-02-2018 05:54 PM

Everything about the buttplate on the subject gun looked to be correct and I am not surprised that the letter supports that. It is good that there is record of the return.

I wonder if damage to the original stock was suffered in a way the the owner felt a steel plate on the new one would be better. ?

Yes

Dean Romig 10-02-2018 08:17 PM

Remington was known to stray somewhat (sometimes) from the standards set in Meriden.

So I'm curious. The letter says the gun was shipped to Iver Johnson Sporting Goods in Boston. Is this the same company as Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works of Fitchburg, Mass.?

Dean Romig 10-04-2018 07:25 AM

I’m sure it was John.
The Fitchburg address was their factory while the Boston address was likely a retail outlet.

Rick Losey 10-04-2018 07:31 AM

they sold a variety of sporting goods -

I have a Hardy fly reel marked Iver Johnson - a 3 1/8 Uniqua

Dave Tercek 10-04-2018 07:36 AM

I have a Parker Trojan that was shipped to them.
