Fall 2018 Journal of the PGCA
I got my copy of the Fall 2018 PARKER PAGES in the mailbox yesterday. I settled down to read it a while ago.
Right out of the gate, on page 4, there was Mike Franzen’s article in his series of ”on the road-style” pieces that sail under the banner of Parker Chronicles. It was about Niles Oesterle and turkey hunting -- the calling; the call-making; the personalities involved and the selection for the hunt of the more venerable of Parker guns. If Mike’s piece had been the entirety of the Fall reportage of the PGCA quarterly I would have been a satisfied customer, conveying as it does so well those inescapably transcendent qualities that register within us of Parkerdom. And, that’s just the first article. |
Mike's articles are always the highlight of the Parker Pages for me.
|
My daughter told me today’s mail included my issue of PP. I suggested that if she left ASAP, she could make Greenville by nightfall. So much for my waning powers of persuasion.
|
I’ll drive up with a new issue but you know what the price will be, don’t you?

Seems you doubt me....?

It was a good read. I got a special measure of enjoyment out of Mills' article on beaters.
|
Your article was great too, Bill. I also re-read an earlier issue with your article on Dave Fjelline. Also great and Dave is a great guy to do business with
|
I'm glad the PP finally made it to Colorado yesterday! Great articles by all. The Buell gun restoration article was interesting. I still wonder how the pitting was removed from the metal (i.e., did they weld it to build up the area or sand it somehow)?

Ken, Brad Bachelder micro-welded each and every pit.

I just got home from an extended vacation and found PP waiting in the mailbox. Dean has done an outstanding job of editing and arranging. IMO this is one of the best issues I’ve ever read. All the authors did an outstanding job with their contributions. Speaking for my article, Dean made it much more appealing by his selection and placements of the photos. Julia gets the credit for taking the pictures. She is always willing to help out.

Thanks very much Mike.
I’ve said it before and I’m glad to say it again... A great deal of how “eye-appealing” Parker Pages is must be credited to our layout artist, Brandon Hoffman, at our publisher. The high quality pictures are the result of you folks sending me the high resolution pictures I can work with. I can crop them and enhance them without fear of losing any clarity of detail because of what I start witn. I specify the pages I want the pictures on and how big I want the pictures to be (on a ‘space available’ basis) but Brandon brings it all together to that which you get in your mailboxes. When he has done his magic he then sends me an electronic version of the magazine and I make the final adjustments and send it back to him with my approving “Print it!” reply. Best, Dean . |
I especially liked the article on “Beaters” ! And the the thing I noticed most in the pictures was Niles Osterle with his trusty “Thermacell” strapped on

Insect repellant is one of the most important things while turkey hunting

Enjoyed everyone's articles! Keep up the good work!

I finally had a chance to read the PP'S as well ! I receive two NRA Magazines , one Automobile magazine and the Double Gun Journal and Parker Pages three of these are quarterly and I will say Parker Pages is always my favorite , GREAT JOB done by all ! I have to ask ,One of my favorite sections was always " Parkers Found " ,wondering why that seems to have been dropped ?

There have been no recent additions to Parkers Found so, in order to allow for a couple of more articles, I left it out. Many members can jump start Parkers Found by contacting Josh Loewensteiner with data on your rare or ‘first of’ or ‘last of’ or highly unusual (documented) Parkers. I know I have a few I’ve never submitted to Josh for inclusion in Parkers Found, so I’m guilty too. . |
Dean, turn some of those in! I want to get my early lifter “hinge pin” gun in!
|
I should do that Mark. I’ll send a few serial numbers to Josh before the Winter Issue comes out.

I don't believe there are enough praises for the Parker Pages. Definitely the best read for me. Mike Franzen's article could be the best so far. Mike mentioned Rob Keck. I first met Rob Keck in the late sixties. Rob is originally from Perry County, PA. I was visiting my uncle and we went over to Rob's to pick up the first, that I ever heard of, mouth call. I watched Rob cut pieces of aluminum and poke holes in them with a nail then cover them with plastic tape. I hunted with my uncle many times after that and he called in many turkeys with the mouth call. As the article says Rob went on to become a champion caller and as they say the rest is history. Thanks again Mike.

I have one tiny complaint: I finally joined the Doubles Club, and the list hasn't appeared in the magazine since I got in :crying:!
|
Read the PP while at Hilton Head today. Unfortunately, the gov ordered mandataory evacuation tomorrow due to Hurricane Florence. This is the2nd year in a row we have been run out by a hurricane. but don't worry about me, I am not a beach person anyway--pray that all in the path of the storm remain safe.
Dean, another great PP. Mills, I totally am into "shooter" Parkers. David, that was a great road trip |
Thanks Harold! I am not a fan of beaches myself, but Hilton Head is a good place. They are predicting the storm will hit Myrtle Beach or north and I don't understand why they are evacuating down here.

Sorry Phil - We'll publish an updated Doubles Club listing in the Spring Issue, 2019, after we have received entries from members for this fall's hunting seasons. . |
:banghead::banghead::crying:I am now convinced that my mailman is a closet
Parker fan, and thoroughly peruses my copy each time before deciding to deliver it to me!!!!!! |
Yeah, I opened mine and it was the x-rated version of Stormy Daniels' new book "Full Disclosure."
|
My copy arrived in the great white north yesterday. Coincidentally, the first snow day of the fall too. Great job by all.

How about with your other mail and periodicals? Do you have a daily newspaper delivered by the USPS? Maybe a visit to the Postmaster at your regional USPO is in order... or at least maybe you could register a formal complaint....? . |
Not seen on the Washington/Idaho border yet.
|
I'm still waiting for my copy here in Southeast Pa also.
|
Made it to the WA/ID border on the 13th. Now I'm feeling a need for a Parker Bros. hammer gun!! Great issue Dean and all the authors.
