Looking for Recommendations
Almost out of SR7625 and looking for a new powder. Considering Clays, International and 700X. Any recommendations or advice? Want pressures in the 6000 to 8000 PSI range and vel. in the 1145 to 1180 range. 1 oz. and 1 1/8 oz. loads.

I'd look at either Titewad, Clays or Extralite John. Once you discover the magic of 7/8 and 3/4oz. low pressure loads these three powders really shine but they also work well with 1 and 1 1/8oz. Check the Alliant and Hodgdon sites for recipes.
Good luck breaking 'em off your tower! |
John,As Daryl said previously Titewad

I am a fan of 700-x, from 3/4 oz 20 ga to 1 1/4 oz 10 ga loads.
most loads you load at 1150 fps are 5800 to 7000 psi depending on ga. Have been shooing 700-x from the 1970s to date scott |
I use Clays for 7/8oz loads for sporting clays and skeet and International for 1oz. for trap in my league. Consider also using 8.5 shot. I use size #8.5 shot for each for less payload per shell (easy for gun and the shoulder) but has more pellet count than #8 and #7 1/2 vs 1 1/8oz loads My 1oz load for trap with Federal components with International with a full choke W97 Black Diamond Tournament Grade smokes targets.

I have used both clays and international clays for low pressure 12's with either 7/8th or 1oz shot charges.

I use Clay Dot for 7/8 and 1 oz loads from the Alliant website. I use same powder weight for both, but different wad. The 7/8 is a great load at 1,200 FPS.

I like 700-X.

My hesitation with 700x would be that it may go the way of SR7625. If you are a one-powder guy, consider something a bit more modern. Lots of great options presented above.

I like 700X, and if it does disappear there's still plenty around to buy before you go to a new powder. Going to a different powder is no big deal. For those of us who reload a lot, back during the powder shortage we had to try different powders. If it were me, I'd contact Hodgdons and Allaint on the web and ask for their reloading manuals to be sent to you. They're small and fairly thin, but hold a lot of info that you can easily compare. It's much easier than trying to do it on their web sites. When you get up to 1 1/8oz and above, the choices go down for low pressure loads. Good luck. Paul

Craig, let me know if you decide you want to part with any of the SR7625. I love that powder. John

I've used SR7625 for my 16ga loads from the very beginning. When I find something I like I stick with it be it shotgun or rifle and am not one to experiment. When I heard that SR7625 was going to be discontinued I scarfed up about 30 lbs of it. I'm still good....for a while:)
