Recent 16 Gauge Trojan Find
 

Found this Trojan at a recent gun show (did not purchase but I did get the sellers contact info and might follow up) Although the photos do not show the whole gun - it would be great to hear feedback and opinions on condition and value. The barrels are clean and dent free - inside very clean. Stock shows plenty of time in the field - just wear and age. Forearm wood appears to have a crack but not sure how far it goes.... Seller suggested the gun appears to have never been "into" based on the screw timing. The gun seemed to be functional and mechanically sound.

Any suggestions or rough idea on what would be a fair price range for this Trojan would be much appreciated.

Looks to be in pretty decent condition. How long are the barrels and what was the seller asking?

I agree with Dean it appears to be a nice gun. Did ut have a proper butt plate or did someone stick a ventilated recoil pad on it. I have the habit of finding nice condition Trojans with ugly recoil pads. Also like Dean said what barrel length?

The forearm crack wouldn't worry me except for where it was located. If its along the latch that might be more of an issue.

I did not get a measurement on the barrels - I could find out if I decide to pursue it. What length should they be?

We were kicking around $800... the crack in the forearm had me a little concerned.... so I figured I would research it a little more and ask for some opinions here on the forum.

The butt plate did appear to be correct.... wear marks consistent with the rest of the gun - no pad. I should have taken better photos. I will ask about the barrel length - what would be the correct barrel length?

It depends. I think most 16 gauge trojans were 28 or 26 I believe. Might be a few 30s.

Serialization book says 28" barrels.

If the barrels are still 28" it is probably worth the price you and he are "kicking around".

Hi Brian, regardless of whether or not you decide to buy the gun, the fact that you are asking for advice is probably the best thing you could ever do. I almost always get an opinion or two before I spend ANY money. That’s how you keep from wasting your money and learn what to look for and lookout for. Good luck.

Yes, that’s definitely better than my method of buying overpriced project guns, then asking questions.

I have recently spent considerable time looking through Gun Broker, Guns Intl etc... and other online sources to try to get a feel for pricing. I know it will take some time and diligence to get a good feel for the values and know how to avoid the problem guns.

However, I may need some help shaking this addiction to Parkers in the near future....

$800.00 imho is a good price if the gun is still on face and operating. A gun is original only once and when the condition gets worn down as this one has it's gone. Don't worry about the small stuff, it dose not matter. It's not a collector quality gun it,s a gun that you can enjoy and shoot/ hunt and pass down. Make it your own shoot it as is or completely refinish to your hearts content. The fact that the original butt plate or front bead is not correct matters not one wit.

At $800, my bet is that the gun is sold. It sure would be if I were at that gun show.

We were able to pick the gun up today and here are some photos I took this evening. Thanks to everyone for your help.

Shotguns have a way of attaching themselves to you. I have a Trojan 16 about same condition as yours. It’s one of my favorite shooters. Better looking higher priced Parker’s in the rack I like the Trojan 16 as much as any.

We can’t help you with that. But, by getting opinions and advice you will have a better chance of spending all you money more wisely.

That looks like a very solid Parker that will give you a lot of service for longer than we could ever put wear on it. According to the I.D. book, it was build in 1913 so you own a 105 year old gun that is still ready for the field. For the money you mentioned, I would say you made a good buy that is really a nice piece of Parker history and the 16 gauge is getting more popular every day. Congrats and enjoy!

The Trojan was built and priced for the average guy who wanted a good gun and that one has probably put a lot of meat on a families table, wish they could talk.
