Kent TM low pressure load
1 Attachment(s)
I love the performance of Kent TM shot but the factory shells generate a pressure of 10000 psi plus. I felt uncomfortable shooting the factory loads in my vintage guns, even my Super Foxes and #3 frame 12 ga. Parkers. So I developed a load from harvested TM shot from factory loads and had it tested. The load is 12ga 2 3/4" Cheddite hull, 209 Cheddite primer, 28.5 GR Longshot, Remington Fig. 8 wad, 1 1/4 oz. #5 Kent TM. 1204 FPS, EV. 23, 5466 PSI. EV. 300.
I am very happy with how mild the load is. I am NOT Recommending this load it is for information only. Craig Larter |
Nice consistent load, good job!

Wow Craig. Thanks for sharing. You do seem to have found your calling. Your ten gauge load is the best and I would imagine lots of old 10g. guns thank you. Now this. I wonder how this would translate with other nontox shot.

Wow, I would have never thought a 1 1/4oz load at 1200fps could have such a low pressure. Hodgdons only shows 1330fps loads with Longshot with a 1 1/4oz [ lead load ] in a Federal hull [ straight walled like a Cheddite hull ]. It's nice you had the idea to test it at 1200fps. Thanks.

It's what Craig posted in the first post of this thread. You have to reload them.

the last kent tm vs nice shot comparison i had done came out with nice shot 4 to 500 psi higher in a ten gauge load http://parkerguns.org/forums/showthr...highlight=kent |
Sorry James - should have read both post a little better. You could use the same load in the 10 and be safe, but it might be a bit low in the 10ga. If it were me and I wanted one tested for the 10, I'd load a couple with 30 and 32grs of Longshot and send them to Tom or Precision Reloading for testing.

The only figure 8 wads I'm seeing are 1 1/8oz are these the correct wad? Thanks
|
Craig, I've been using a very similar load to that, with bismuth, in my HE for a couple years now. Longshot powder, Nitro 27 hull, RP12 wad Cheddite 209, 1 1/4 oz. bismuth.
Very effective load on ducks. Thanks for posting. SRH |
I didn't read where the OP said it was a 10ga load, but a 12ga load. But with the 10ga in mind, many of us have found that any mild 12ga load can most certainly be used as a 10ga load. The chamber diameter is larger with the 10, so pressure has more of an area to spread out in, so pressure will be lower. Yes I know you're using a different wad, but IMHO even that isn't going to up the pressure were it's dangerous. If you have the powder companies reloading booklets and look up different gauges with the same powder you'll see pressure always goes down as gauge goes up. There's nothing wrong with sticking to recommended data, especially if you're reloading at the higher pressures, but at mild pressures it's still just reloading for shotguns - low pressure compared to pistol or rifle. Just use a little common sense.
