No "Parker Bros" anywhere?

I saw that one also, and was wondering the same thing.

It has what I consider to be Runge engraving so I believe it is what we call a "transition" Parker. I have pictures of one that is nearly identical except with about 70% case colors and the serial number confirms that it is a transition Parker. Serial number on the one I have shown here is 236199 which translates to 1933. Remington Arms purchased the Parker gun works in 1934 and this one was obviously finished after Remington took ownership - hence the lack of Parker Bros. or Parker anywhere on the frame, but the grip cap and the rib inscription are identified as "Parker Bros. Meriden Conn."

Jay, there are a number of things about this gun which raise questions. My guess is Yes on the checkered cheek panels as well as the unusual butt plate. I have only seen one other butt plate like this one on a Parker. I'll post pics of the butt plate later today.

Dean, I own Parker 236,200 It is a 16g GHE with the same style engraving. I had come to the conclusion that it was a transition gun also as no Parker Bros on the side but clearly marked Parker Special Steel on the beautiful tapered rib. With only 83 guns total in 1933 I think they had plenty of time to work on guns and they are some of the best fitted guns to come out of the Parker factory ! That's probably wishful on my part because I own one. I really enjoy the birds engraved on the gun same style as yours and the pair of quail on the side are just great. my gun does not have checkered side panels or the unique butt plate that your gun exhibits. Transition Gun. MY 28 was 236475 and had no inscription on the receiver, but the top rib and grip cap were Meriden.

I’ll look for my pictures I have of Burt Spiller’s VH 236252 to see how it is marked.

The widows peak is not unique to Parker. I wish I hadn’t sold it (hell, I wish I still had every gun I’ve ever owned) but I had. Simpson 8x57JR double rifle that had a widows peak and checkered butt plate. It looked like horn but was probably gutte percha.

236199 was the 40th Parker of 1933(?) Remington having purchased the Parker Gun Works in 1934, but the absence of any identifying manufacturer name anywhere on the frame would seem to indicate the gun was finished and shipped sometime after Remington ownership. The barrel rib has the correct legend identifying it as "Parker Bros. Maker, Meriden, Ct. Parker Spec. Steel" and I will always wonder about the butt plate as being original (Remington not having bought the "Parker Brothers" name which was on all Parker hard rubber butt plates up to that point.) or a replacement.

Has anyone ever seen a butt plate like this one on an early Remington Parker ?

Perhaps it was all they could come up with prior to mold making and production of the “Parker No Bros” plate. I’ve never seen another.

I still submit that regret is one of the strongest emotions. Edgar's statement might appear on a headstone or two (probably mine, at least). :crying:

Several years ago I started keeping records of all "Transition" Parkers (Parkers with NO Parker or Parker Brothers engraved on the guns frame) that I came across.

I added two new Parkers to that list because of this "thread" (sn 236200 & sn 235908).

The list now numbers 35.

The earliest serial number on that list is sn 234987. This gun is a Trojan 12 ga.
Sn 234987 is an abnormally in that the next lowest serial number is sn 235908 the GHE ? ga, that Dean posted on this thread . The last serial number that I have found is sn 236563.

The list of 35 includes only two Trogans. It then runs through V, G, D and C grades. The lone C grade is a CHE 12 ga two barrel set with 2 beavertails, SST
and English grip.

The gages include 12, 16, 20, 28 and 410.

There are 8 ,410 ga on the list.

Ralph - David Trevallion recently (2 years ago) sold his personal 20 gauge Trojan which had no Parker Bros. or Parker anywhere on the frame. I don't know what the serial number was however.

235908 by the way, is a GH - no E.

I do not have any Trogan 20 ga on my list.

235908 is a 12 ga. 30” PSS chokes are .043” and .044” XF/XF

Ralph you can add 236421 to your data base. 16 ga. 30" vent rib 1934 mfg date.

Ralph, here is another "Transition Parker": 12g. DHE, 30" bbls, F&F, mfg. in 1934. I purchased it from Gary Carmichael Sr. in 2012.

Thanks Bill, the list of "transition" Parkers not stand at 38.

Burt Spiller’s 20 gauge VH 236252 appears to be in that range. Further investigation is needed to see if the marks are PB or Remington era.

Parker Trojan #234987--only Parker Bros/Trojan Steel on the rib. Parker made the gun circa 1930 but it did not ship until July 2, 1934--destination and recipient unknown.
