Scratchin' the 'itis

Small town gun shows - you just never know. Went to buy some pies if the ladies had them again this year - and they did. Got a cherry, apple/saskatoon berry and a five berry pie. Now that the important part was done, I wandered through the displays. And then I found a peach - and not a pie. A W. Kavanagh hammer gun made in Dublin Ireland. It was in beautiful mechanical condition. It is from the later 1800's but I have yet to figure that out exactly. Bores are mirror, damascus pattern is lovely but could be brought back better than it is. Nice engraving. Jones underlever holds the action and barrels very tight. I can't wait to give the wild pheasants a go with this gun in the fall. A few pics for your enjoyment. Cheers, Jack

Nice looking hammer! If you need help eating the pies, please send them my way.

First pie passes taste test. Wife had a tiny slice but I had already cut it so I had to follow through and enjoy the rest - essentially half a pie. That’s about the only thing left that I can still do like when I was in my twenties fifty years ago

Proof marks and just for fun the seldom seen screws on the forend iron all fancied up no less. I have not seen that level of enthusiasm for hidden screws before. Cheers, Jack

Very nice find. You can freeze one of those pies and by the time you get to Channing it will be ready to eat. I'll have a new upstart pup ready to get into the game.

Jack Cronkhite 04-09-2018 02:02 PM

I could not let a pie sit in the freezer that long. It would keep calling my name at ridiculous hours until I would succumb and add those enjoyable unnecessary calories to the spare tire. I don't expect them to last the week and then I will have had my pie fix for a while. Channing you say. Hmmmmm...........

Rich Anderson 04-09-2018 02:09 PM

Maybe you can refreshen the supply by bird season.

OH, Jack, it's "scratching the itis" I misunderstood. Nice gun.

Jack Cronkhite 04-09-2018 05:41 PM

Yeah, the Parkeritis spread to "other fine doubles" when encountered. Cheers, Jack

Lovely!!!

What is it about under levers and hammers that make guns so attractive?

Jack Cronkhite 04-16-2018 10:18 AM

For those concerned about the pies, they are gone. I would say wife had two thin slices. Gotta love a girl like that. Cheers, Jack

As they say "all good things must come to an end". So it is with the best things in life, bird season, deer season and pie:)
