Primer Substitution: 10 Gauge Load
I am loading once fired RST 10 gauge Cheddite hulls. My Winchester primers fit somewhat loose. They don’t back out but I am not assured they won’t. May I substitute Cheddite primers safely. Using 19 grs Red Dot and 11/8 oz shot. Thanks

With 1&1/8 oz and 19.0 grs of Red Dot I use these primers interchangeably. Great results on the clays course.

I don't think there's a problem with pressure but aren't the diameters the same thus not making any difference with fit. I've read somewhere that Cheddite makes two different size primers, one for the USA and one for across the pond - where they're from. I believe BPI sells 10ga Cheddite hulls and you might ask them what's the proper primer. Let us know what you find out.

Cheddite primers are slightly larger than US made primers and can be safely substituted in that load .

I have the same problem with winchester 209 but have been using Nobel sport primers with good luck. JMO. Carvel

Ed,
We discussed primers being spit out of Cheddite hulls used in autos on this thread. Not as much of a concern on doubles. http://parkerguns.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23282 Three solutions: Different primer. Primer Pocket Peener (formerly William's product, now BPI has them) If shells are already made, cheap dollar store fingernail polish around primer after already seated if you fear they will come out. It works and waterproofs. Clear or colors. I used blue for steel loads, red for non-toxic when I reload waterfowl loads. |
this is a good tip e a always knew that finger nail polish was good for something....excuse me ladies...charlie...

Cheddite 209 primers have the same diameter as any American 209 primer. Cheddite hulls, which are made overseas, use a European primer that is slightly larger. At least that is my understanding about sizes of different primers. RIO primers are also largerAfriend at the club thought all those blue RIO hulls laying around were too pretty to leave lay. Then he had to order straight walled hull wads and RIO primers. He went back to Remingtons after a 1000.
|
The Cheddite primers I buy are slightly larger than American 209 primers and fit the Euro hulls better .
|
Then I don't believe you're buying 209 primers.
|
Believe what you want . What else would they be ?
|
Mark, I think you took my last reply the wrong way. What I was trying to say was Cheddite makes two different size primers, a European size, and a American size primer. I have measured Cheddite 209 primers and they are the same size as Win primers. I know I can go from Win to Cheddite and back without any problems with fit. On other reloading web sites guys have said about problems with fit if they get the wrong Cheddite primers. I know RIO primers are bigger. Hope this clears things up a bit.

I have never heard they made 2 different sizes before . I know they make different strength primers . But the only ones I have seen available here are the Clerinox CX2000 type 209 . Which are the ones I use that in Cheddite hulls that stay put . They measure slightly larger than American made primers . If I use any of the American made primers in Cheddite hulls they are a loose fit unless you condition the primer pocket first . I haven't had to buy any new Ched primers in a bout 5 years or so maybe they changed them .
Which Cheddite primers are you using ? |
I've used Cheddite for oh, I'm not sure, but for 8 or 10 years. I broke my leg 13 days ago so I can't get down in the basement to check. I did a little checking and found the Cheddite primers for foreign use were never imported to the USA, so I was wrong on that count. Here's some measurements:
This should answer some questions. Point A is the measurement at the top of primer. Point B is the measurement taken as close to the flange as possible. Primer Brand Point A Point B CCI .239" .241"- Cheddite .238" .243"- Federal .242" .241"- Fiocchi .243" .243"- Nobel Sport .242" .242"- Remington .241" .240"- Rio .245" .244"- Winchester .236" .242"- Wolf .238" .242" I'm not sure what a Cheddite hull measures. |

And they're cheaper, the only reason I use them.
