Parker 12ga Grade "D"
 

I have come across a new shotgun and was needing some help on what it is and what it might be worth? So here goes:

Parker 12ga. Model D

It’s a 1930’s model D - Parker 12 gauge double barrel shotgun in very good condition with the original blueing on it and original stock. The serial number is 236990. It has steel barrels, not damascus. It is a trap gun and I was told it is a "D" grade. The receiver has a setter engraved on the left, a pointer engraved on the right and a pheasants engraved on the bottom. It has a beaver tail forearm and double ivory beads. It has case hardened blueing on the receiver and blueing on the barrels. The blueing on the barrels is in great shape. It is a single trigger with extractors, not ejectors. I recently saw one like mine at the Cabela's collector gun room priced at $5,000, but really don't know what it might be worth? Someone told me that my configuration is really pretty rare!

Hello Cameron. What is the length of the barrels?

28"

28" is a very unusual length for a trap gun. Most were 32" and far fewer were 30" while I believe 28" would be rare.

Where would I find any detailed information on it? Like value? Who owned it? Where it went? How many were made like this? Etc?

I'd say the buttstock has been replaced and the vent rib might not be original, the rib matting doesn't look right. The White Line pad probably isn't original either.

How to check for an original factory rib?

Cameron, the ID & Ser. book shows your gun as a straight grip, 28" with ejectors, single trigger, large forend (BTFE) and vent rib as options. It now sports a pistol grip stock so it is pretty likely that it has been restocked at some point in it's life. Nonetheless, it is a rare (unique) and valuable Parker as, according to the table on page 402 of Vol. 1 of The Parker Story, it is very probably the only "known" 28-inch trap gun of any grade.

Now to get down to "brass tacks", on the underside of the barrel lug should be 12 indicating the gauge and closer to the rear of the lug will be the frame size. Your gun should have either the 1 1/2 frame or the 1/2 frame . . . how is yours marked??

Hmmmm the matting just looks odd, must be the cloudy pics.....

Destry, I've seen both types of matting on vent ribs - both the wavy-line matting we're all accustomed to seeing as well as the "matte finish" as shown on this one.

Cameron, you say your gun has extractors rather than ejectors but in the second picture showing the breech end of the barrels there is definitely a screw head visible on the doll's head to secure the retainer plate for ejectors . . . and the book says it was produced with ejectors, so . . . ?

Is there a screw at the north end of your forend? Maybe you could picture that area for us. Is the rib actually just finished with a matted surface or does it have a pattern of swirls machined or pressed into it? The trigger guard seems to be modified for the pistol grip. Is the serial number still engraved into the trigger guard?

Pretty interesting how he just stopped communicating here.

My guess is that he no longer owns the gun.

Maybe it was what he had in mind to start with. What better way to sell than show it off.
