Louisa Duponts quail gun,my great grandma.Parker single trigger side by side 28gauge

Hello,
My name is Kenneth Carpenter. I am a direct descendant of the Dupont family. My great grandma was Louisa Dupont. I have a Parker 28 gauge single trigger side by side shot gun that i am trying to see what its worth. Im having trouble understanding how to communicate on this forum and this is the first time i was able to write a letter. Would you happen to know where on this site would be the best to ask these question about my gun and its heritage? would appreciate any input i can get.

Thank you
Ken Carpenter

Ken,
You are in the right forum. It would help to have pictures of the gun to be able to
see the grade and condition of the gun. The providence that it is a Duponts family gun
adds to the value.

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 03:50 PM

Im trying to learn how to post pics.do you know how? Could you price it with pics and serial number?

Jeff Kuss 02-09-2018 03:54 PM

On the home page there are instructions on how to post pictures. You can email them to me and I will post them for you.

See the two video's at the bottom of www.parlerguns.org after you click on the FAQ link on it's left side. The list on the left of our home page are links that can help you learn about Parker guns. The process to post pictures on the forum can be found on the FAQ link (assuming you are using Windows on your computer).

The way I post pics is to copy them from an image hosting site. There are several to choose from, I use Imgur.com. Download the pics to the site then copy from the site to the thread here. There are other ways to do it as well. Value will depend on condition, grade, originality etc., but being a 28 gauge from the Dupont family makes for an interesting gun! Good luck!

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 04:14 PM

That would be great Jeff, thank you. I will send them to your email. My email is Carpenterken@comcast.net

Mr. Carpenter:
The gun you have possesses at least two levels of value. One as a 28-bore Parker (of unknown grade as yet) and Two, as an heirloom of the DuPont family. BOTH of these dimensions must be considered to result in an approximate dollar value.

Your best bet is to contact an independent arms appraiser.

Even then, "value" is nebulous. If you intend to sell the gun, it has one value. Auction it? That's another value. Keep it? in that case, YOU know best... perhaps after some general guidance here.

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 04:23 PM

I send you like 12 pics.

John Dallas 02-09-2018 04:48 PM

Mr. Carpenter - Welcome to the Forum.

I would assume you are related to Ruly Carpenter. He went to Tower Hill, and I was a couple of years behind him at Friends. Did you grow up in Wilmington?

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 05:20 PM

I dont know a Ruly, but yes i grew up in Wilmington Delaware til i was 11. But i think my mom mentioned that name before, possibly Bobby.s brother. My great uncle Bobby Carpenter owned the Philidephia Phillies. My grand mother was Louisa Dupont . My great grandma Margereta Dupont. Im that last of the Dopunt/Carpenter bloodline. The youngest accept for my daughter..

Todd Poer 02-09-2018 05:31 PM

I can tell you what adds to the gun's provenance and range of value is the documented story. Do you have pictures of your grandma using or holding the gun. Picture tells a thousand words. Also any stories you have that you can document really helps. Being that your family started off with a gunpowder mill tells an interesting story.

There are several folks here that no doubt are interested in small bore Parker's and they will help you out best they can.

I can say this and it could be misleading and as someone also suggested you might need to talk to an honest professional that specializes in gun appraisals. There is a 28 ga that has a strong grade and condition that is listed at $40k, again that is an asking price and not certain how that compares to your gun and it may or may not be a reasonable price expectation. Very hard to say. We were all just mentioning the other day that gun was on the market at that price and no takers for over a year so there is that.

Personally if you think your daughter would ever appreciate it or would even like to own and shoot her great grandmas gun then, you have a pretty obvious path. Great story though.

John Dallas 02-09-2018 05:36 PM

Ruly owned the Phillies in the '70's

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 05:47 PM

Also it was Magereta Duponts gun before Louisa. Magereta was my great grandma, not Louisa. Put my grandma instead of my great grandma accidentally.

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 05:56 PM

Then they were def related. Im still trying to learn my history myself. I did have it appraiser at a gun show by a gun collector and he priced it at 45 to 50. That was without Heritage. I dont have any pictures. But i have proof that i am who i say i am and Margereta Dupont was my great grandma.

Kenneth Carpenter 02-09-2018 06:00 PM

Ill have pics up hopefully by tomr. But in a different room prob. Under general parker forum, under Lousia duponts gun. i mistyped Louisa on the main page,so look for Lousia dupont gun spelling instead of Louisa.

Sounds like a great gun with some neat family history. Looking forwrd to see pictures and hearing about this gun.
I also have a duPont shotgun ordered for TC duPont. The wood is in the process of being refinished. I am posting the picture of the Parker research letter on this gun.

You should see about ordering a letter on your Parker.

Drew Hause 02-09-2018 07:21 PM

Kenneth: were Margaretta Lammot Carpenter (du Pont) your great-grandmother, and Louisa Andelot Carpenter your grandmother?

My technical assessment of this gun is that I can't afford it.

Mills Morrison 02-09-2018 10:43 PM

Welcome Kenneth. It is not every day that such a nice Parker walks in here

Mike McKinney 02-09-2018 11:38 PM

Kenneth, I would not consider valuing your gun, however, I would advise joining the PGCA and take advantage of a letter, if available, for a lesser price. That would also give you the benefit of offering the gun to members once you have decided you want to sell it. We hope the info will tweak your interest and you will decide to keep the gun and become an active PGCA member.

Bill Murphy 02-10-2018 12:49 PM

Mr. Carpenter, many years ago, I had a delightful afternoon visit with Mrs. Carpenter, who I assume maybe was your mother, maybe your grandmother. The year escapes me, but it was at the time when "Hidden Dream" was on the market. I have a file of correspondence with her, that I can't put my hands on right now, but I am still looking. In that file was also a realtor's color folder describing and pricing "Hidden Dream". She and I could not arrive at a price for the gun, and I assume she was never able to get her price. That's the gun business. On the way out the drive, I left an expensive bottle of Chardonnay in the mailbox as an enticement for her to keep in touch. I will let you know when I find the correspondence. Bill Murphy in Maryland.

Bill Murphy 02-10-2018 01:03 PM

I found the correspondence and discovered that Mrs. Carpenter was Judy Carpenter. Maybe you could tell us about her. Bill Murphy

Ken, the picture of your guns trigger guard is not very sharp on my computer, but it appears as it might be a rolled-edge trigger guard ?

Triple click the picture in post #20, and you'll see it's not.

Kenneth Carpenter 02-10-2018 05:35 PM

Kenneth Carpenter 02-10-2018 05:37 PM

Its my Mom, she married Ronald Dupont Andelot Carpenter. Louisa's son,Mageretta"s grandson, my dad.

Kenneth Carpenter 02-10-2018 06:12 PM

Very interesting. Im very intrigued on what you said and would love to hear you info. Look forward to it.

Rich Anderson 02-10-2018 08:14 PM

Thats a nice gun with family history. As long as there is family IMHO it should remain with family.

Phillip Carr 02-10-2018 08:58 PM

I must say I agree with Rich. I could only wish that I inherited a family gun.

Bill Murphy 02-11-2018 07:57 AM

Was Judy Carpenter, the lady who offered the gun to me, your sister in law, married to your brother?
