Duck hunting with the Super Fox

My son and I went duck hunting on the Combahee River this past weekend. They told us their duck numbers were down, but we still got two and my Dad, who shot a short distance from us, got a Pintail. All in all a good time.

nice looking habitat

those of us who have been frozen in for so long can live vicariously at least :corn:

Mills Morrison 01-29-2018 11:26 AM

Actually, it was warmer than it had been (like 50's). Earlier this month, this field was completely frozen and all of the ducks left, according to our guide. They were just starting to come back.

Mills treasure the time with your son as i do mine. They will be the best time of your life. I wish you many more and look forward to your photos.

Is that a Kautzky single trigger?

Nice silver crescent treatment on that ball grip - a la, a certain Parker we know of...

Mills, tell us about your SuperFox - looks like a custom gun with some unusual woodwork and checkering. What are the chokes & chambers, etc.?

Mills Morrison 01-29-2018 11:49 AM

It is a Kautzky single trigger.

The gun was a wreck and the prior owner had it restored with all new woodwork. 30" barrels with 3" chambers. Full and Full, but not sure of the exact measurements.

Dan Aubihl did the wood work

That is what I call raising a boy right. Bet, the young man uses yes sir and no sir when addressing adults.

Mills your son is very fortunate to have a father that mkes it a priority to include him in these hunting adventures. It wont be too long and he will be dropping duck beside you. Enjoy these times to the fullest. He will be a man before you know it.

Thanks Phil. Thanks everyone

What do feed your Super Fox Mills?

Mills Morrison 01-29-2018 02:58 PM

3" Kent Tungsten Matrix. I think I had a box of 4's and a box of 5's. Pretty strong stuff

CraigThompson 01-29-2018 06:00 PM

Very nice

Mills Morrison 01-29-2018 08:00 PM

Next to the 8 gauge, I would say the super fox is the strongest gun I own. And I have 6 10 gauges

That is pretty strong stuff. Makes me wonder about the recoil. How is it ? I know that's a heavy gun but....

Mills Morrison 01-30-2018 08:07 AM

It is not too bad

Yes, and I missed a bunch.

While we are at it, here is a look back at Harry's first hunt compared to now. They grow fast.

There's actually liquid water somewhere on the planet???

I have a grade 3 “cannon breach” Ithaca flues 12 waterfowl gun with a straight stock. It has 3” chambers, but I have been leary of shooting that hot of a load from it. I might have to try!

I've owned my Super-Fox two-barrel set since the summer of 1963. It shot a lot of ducks and geese in the first forty seasons I owned it. This Pintail on 29 October 2002, is the last fowl I shot with it --

I then fell in with the English setter crowd and it has been all upland hunting since then.

Rick Losey 01-31-2018 12:28 PM

Understandable David

Upland hunting was my first passion -I fell for grouse as I kid when I first flushed one in an overgrown field- but I hunted mostly ducks for a while for nearly a decade in the late 80's /early 90's because a good friend knew I wanted a hunting dog and gave me a golden retriever that turned out to be an outstanding dog.

It had been setters all the way since she retired and I still have one. But with the decline of grouse and woodcock populations and getting a chance to join in with a great group of serious waterfowl hunters I proudly call friends - a Super seemed to be the proper way to go. And I added another golden to the family

It still about tradition and doing it right
