Barrel Fitting

Can # 1 frame hammered damascus barrels be fitted to # 1 frame hammerless gun?

Rick Losey 01-24-2018 08:39 AM

not easily - the lugs are different

Dean Romig 01-24-2018 09:45 AM

Radically different but I think Brian Dudley has done it.

most likely - i know he went the other way, fitted blocked fluid steel to a hammer gun frame- but that used the old lugs

Hmmm... I thought it was Brian who machine-cut and welded the lug to conform to the frame that the barrels were being fitted to.

There were pictures and everything.

In any case, it can be done.

he may have - he does some interesting stuff - and surely he will comment on this topic anyway

but - that said -

enough time and enough money  almost anything is doable

of course - a Purdey might be cheaper :rotf:

Dean, That was Russ Bickle that did those conversions. Unfortunately Russ has since passed on.

Dean Romig 01-24-2018 12:20 PM

Right Dave, Russ did some work for me but I saw the pictures on a forum (thought it was here) and it may have been on doublegunshop and it could have been Dewey but I can't swear to who did the work but I thought it was Brian.

Anything can be done, I would not recommend trying it.

There really is no need to have to do this. Hammerless barrels are out there.

Brad Bachelder 01-24-2018 03:19 PM

Hammer barrel lugs can be converted to hammerless guns. the considerations are frame size and dollshead configuration. We just completed two sets.

This is interesting.....i have a “beater” jones underlever english hammer 12, with a really decent set of 32” Bernard barrels. The action and wood are a total basket case, but never really considered repurposing the barrels!

PLEASE don't consider parting out this gun. Instead, send me a PM with pics and price if you'd rather move it on.

Mark Ray 01-25-2018 07:25 PM

I will dig it out and take some photos, but warning in advance that it is ROUGH. If it is here at the house, probably this evening or tomorrow, it might be at the ranch, and if that is the case it will be a week or so.
