“K” barrrels
What type of steel are “K” barrels?
|
"K" is the inspection stamp of the gunworks superintendent until 1910, Charles A. King. His successor, his son Walter King's stamp is W.K. in an oval.
. |
That’s what I thought, away from my resources. This K is a capital letter in the front (muzzle end) and on same side as I struck weight. So, my next question, can 1 frame 16 barrels be fitted to a 1 frame 12?
|
Your chances of fitting 1-frame 16 barrels to the frame of the same size are far better than trying to fit 0-frame barrels to a 1-frame frame.
. |
I can't read Dean's post properly. He will probably fix it after a proofread. Fitting 0 to 1 isn't going to work because the pins are a different distance apart. Fitting 1 to 1, even in different gauges, is much more possible. 1/2 to 1 is also more possible since the pins are an equal distance apart.
|
okay so that was my question, these are 1 frame 16 barrels, and I have the same vintage 1 frame 12 gun, both graded with dollshead, both extractor, then it might work.
|
Bill, I went back and read it again and I corrected my error. My apologies to Bill and Edgar and everyone else reading this thread.
To paraphrase what I had said.... It will be a lot easier to fit 1-frame barrels to a 1-frame 'gun' than to attempt to fit 0-frame barrels to a 1-frame 'gun'. . |

Seriously??? You missed your remedial reading classes? Nope... I missed my remedial writing classes.... |
Regardless, of semantics, syntax, “freudian tyros”, i think i see that frame size, and presence of extractor, or ejectors is the key.....if all other things are equal, a 20 bore 1 frame is identical to a 12 bore 1 frame..
|
Not necessarily "identical" Mark. They will probably still need a lot of fine fitting and filing to make them fit precisely right.

Maybe one of our "barrel" guys can help here?

You're all right in that I left gaps in my 'mind to hand' process that left my statement meaningless. Apologies to all for that.
. |
But anyone with just a basic understanding should have gotten your meaning. Let’s not nitpick
|
Man! I collect shotguns, fish and hunt, smoke cigars and drink bourbon and martinis JUST so i can forget about english class, diagramming sentences, etc! Dean, I know what you meant, but I see this group here at Parker Collectors, like my longtime breakfast group
.......we allow no quarter! Its half the fun. Everett day, I learn more, and have more fun here! Thank You Sincerely to the Parker Peanut Gallery! |
Barrels
Mark shot the 10 bore today it's a cannon. You are finding out as I have this is a good bunch of guys you can be yourself with and that's what counts in my book. Dean and I have become friends even though we have yet to meet face to face. There are a number of them I met at the Southern SXS this year and was a pleasure for sure. You and I have got to get together before this season ends. Have a lull right now while my right eye due to diabetic retinopathy starts to clear. Has been a blur since Dec 5 but maybe 1-2 weeks to go and look out doves or whatever.

The first thing you want to do when trying barrels is to remove the hook from the barrel lug. Sometimes the hook will not disengage from the gun which was not made for the barrels being fitted, which presents quite a challenge.

Right you are Russ - I've been there too. But I had to remove the stock and then remove the floor plate to get it to unhook..... I won't be doing that anymore!

"What type of steel are “K” barrels?"
Possibly I've missed the intent of Mark's question, but the names Parker used for the steel should be marked on the rib, and the composition of several Parker barrel steels is now known courtesy of Dave Suponski and published in the Summer 2014 Parker Pages. Scroll down about 3/4 here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...EK8OtPYVA/edit |
i think the point of Dean's first response was to say it has no relation to steel type, it is an inspection stamp

here is the only pic I have of the barrel flats in question.....
|
Ok, that's Kf which is King's 'finished' stamp.

I seem to recall a discussion a while back about the Kf being a steel mark on the early Vulcan Steel barrels and not Charles King's mark.

I didn’t realize that was an “f”, and since was different font different case, I thought it unrelated to the “K”
