Are you a fan of early GH's?
i seem to recall several people saying they like early GH's Say ser. number 50000 to 80000 or so. I'm just throwing those numbers out there as approximates. If i remember correctly, what is it you like about them? I'm looking at one now and would like to know what draws you to them?
Thanks |
The Wood!

Pictures please

I am a big fan of early GH grades and own 4. I think the engraving seems a bit more finished and, yes, the wood is often quite nice

I would post pictures, but I am on my cell phone and don't know how to do it from here. Check out my album, Parker photos for some photos though

1 frame 12's and 0 frame 16's can be found for uncrazy money.
|
I have one in the 100,000 with some nicely figured wood. Aside from the wood, what would be the difference?`
|
I've got an 1889 EH that has very nice wood . And while I like the later EH/GH engraving the early style without the oval around the birds on the sides of the action is a lot more appealing to me .
|
When people talk about "early" Gs. I beleive the determining factor is the engraving pattern that does not utilize the oval on the sides.

Same with me, Brian

I got this one because of the wood.

Whoa, that is nice

Recently picked up a GH 12, #1 frame serial 848xx 1896. Engraving somewhat fading and good wood. Very nice for it's age.

Interesting to see how they were still figuring out the engraving patterns on the early hammerless guns. Mills' early examples really look like P's with birds added.
|
A lot of gun for the money.

1903 GH, I love the wood, wish I knew how to make the figure pop!

That wood has some very nice figure. It was common that the Grade 2 Parkers exhibited nice figure on one side of the stock while the other side was rather plain.
I may be wrong, but your stock appears th have had a recent re-application of some sort of finish. A complete strip and refinish of the wood, as well as expert re-cutting of the checkering would make that figure really stand out. I am not one to suggest doing so to an original finish but, as I said, yours appears not to be the original finish. . |

I wonder what is the last serial number without the oval vignette and the first serial number with the oval vignette???

Just acquired this GH

Has had a pad added at some point so has probably had the wood refinished, but has great dimensions for me so that makes it even more attractive.

I have an 1890 GH that has the oval, so it was not long at all. The early DH's have the oval design like later GH's. My guess is they changed things around when the PH's came on the market.
