Jim Hall's Unusual Trojan
 

12ga. Jim says 40 of these were ordered by Iver Johnson. This is the only one I've seen. I visited Jim when I left the BSA Jamboree, and am on my way home now.

Not many 1 frame 12ga Trojans, probably fewer still with Twist barrels. This one has a a Miller single trigger.

Anybody seen a late hammer gun with r&r bolt plate?

( this is the 1905 bolt plate, as distinguished from the 1910 bolt plate)

And Jim's exquisite CHE 16ga.

And I got to see again his great A1-S and super B grade, all of which are kept in quite a vault.

My 159157 which was at the annual meeting a few years age has the 'pinless' bolt plate.

My take is this; Was the wear plate really for wear, or to make barrel /frame fitting easier? I have a 5 digit plateless VH that I have put 10 - 20000 rounds through with no wear, and a lifter and a top action with half as many with no wear. That would have been a lot of game shots, even before 1900.

Austin, I suspect both. The popular notion is that it is for wear but we have both seen pre replaceable bolt plate guns with no discernable wear to the lock engagement bite. I think if they are kept greased and a person doesn't consistantly allow the lever to snap back, the engagement will last forever.

Nice post Bruce. Thanks so much for taking the effort. The twist Trojan is incredible. Never knew any were made.

The vault is like that of two friends in Fairbanks. One is made of an old bank vault door, the other I think a Liberty door and frame. Both are built into the high wall of a walk in basement. One contains an impressive collection of class 3 stuff, including some kind of 6' long British? anti tank weapon.

I am impressed with the bank vault- and the great fotos too- Thanks Bruce for sharing- and to your friend Jim for making this possible- A question- in the fotos of the three high grade Parkers, just above the gun in the middle there looks to be a blued tube or barrel with a brazing mark near the end- if you can spot it, can you ID it please??:bigbye:

( its just a prop, wouldn't want the BATFE to get all excited)
