bobutler 07-23-2017 04:06 PM

Glad you brought this up Charlie. Reminds me that it's just around the corner. Think I will also take a VH 20, 26" with mod/mod chokes. PH 12 as back up. It also is 26" and choked skeet/ IC. Hope it cools off a little here in TN before 9/1.

Daniel G Rainey 07-23-2017 05:59 PM

Hope that it cools off here, but it never does before opening day. Will open up with a 16 DHE with 28 inch barrels improved and mod. Will shoot my 16 GH with 28 inch barrels improved and full some too.

Stephen Hodges 07-23-2017 07:14 PM

Well it will probably be cool here in New Hampshire, but unfortunately for us we do not have a dove season:cuss: Or anywhere in New England that I know of.

Edward Yager 07-23-2017 07:57 PM

Begining to see doves sitting on the phone wires, they are heading south. They are song birds here in Michigan, but when they cross the border to Ohio they change into gamebirds.

Michael Moffa 07-23-2017 11:01 PM

It will be heat stroke weather here in the deep Alabama south. It was last year. I will use either a DH 16 or a CH 12. High fliers so tight chokes.

Harry Collins 07-24-2017 12:00 PM

Papa's 20 gauge 28" Trojan will make its 69th consecutive appearance in a certain field on the 1st.

CraigThompson 07-24-2017 12:49 PM

I'm thinking my little Parker VHE 20 gauge 28" M&F (the one in the picture to the left of this post) and a little Sterlingworth 20 gauge 28" also M&F .

Phillip Carr 07-24-2017 02:00 PM

I will take out my 32" VH 20 in case the Whitewings are flying high. Along with my DH 28 for the morning dove.

Mills Morrison 07-24-2017 04:28 PM

Haven't decided yet, but fortunately there is still time

Daniel G Rainey 07-24-2017 05:38 PM

It is wonderful to have choices. Sounds like a reason for another Parker.

Daryl Corona 07-24-2017 06:48 PM

Our group limits the choices to either a 20 or a 28. My choice will be a 30" 20 Fox and a 30" 28 VHE.

Tom Jay 07-24-2017 11:01 PM

Though it will be blasphemous to some in this group, I'll be taking a Win Model 21 12 ga. with 28" M/F barrels.

You'll never get by with just two! :nono:

Join the group Steve, here in Michigan it's the same thing, I just get to watch them fly to states that they are legal in :cuss: Matter of fact I have never been dove hunting, it's something on my bucket list to hopefully do someday.

It will be a struggle Greg but somehow I will overcome the disadvantage of bringing only 2 guns.... then again I like a challenge.

Rich Anderson 07-25-2017 04:55 PM

The bird of peace being shot at:shock: If I could shoot at them I'd take a 16ga hammer gun of some kind.

I'm thinking grouse guns, the opener is Sept. 15th and I need a few (12 or so) to rotate for the month of October when things really get going and the woodcock join the party.

What gun

I consider myself a most lucky dog. A few months ago a very dear friend called and told me about a VHE 28 he knew of in Texas that a widow needed to sell. She had no cell phone and lucky her neighbor helped her pack it up and send so no pictures. Wow when I opened up the box. All original 28" barrels built in 1919 and lettered perfect by Chuck Bishop. Needless to say I will open the Tx dove season with this for white wings I don't care how high up they are!! Backup will be my DHE 20 with 30" barrels. Good luck to all in the field, safe hunting and travels. My Grail is here.

Dean Romig 07-25-2017 10:56 PM

You said it David - You Lucky Dog!!

.

Daryl Corona 07-26-2017 06:45 AM

I'll predict David that you will have so much fun with your new 28 that the 20 DHE won't even come out of the case. Nice find my friend.

Charles Shelton 07-26-2017 02:31 PM

Heat stroke weather here in Texas too.
Hottest dove opening in memory was 110 degrees. It was so hot that even sleeping out under the stars, no one slept until the wee small hours. I am too old for that now and will stay in the AC at 110 degrees.

I hear you !

Five years ago my gunsmith buddy and I had deer and bear Damage Control Permits in a fellows apple/peach orchard . The first animal we got in July of that year it was 102 or 104 in the SHADE . Needless to say anytime we shot a deer or bear we got it as quick as possible and made for home .

We supposedly have DCP's coming this year for two places for deer . To be honest if they fall thru it won't hurt my feelings

VH 16 28 in. cyl/full with new-to-me RST shells . . . we'll see. I've had good success with a Model 21 (20 ga. 28 in. mod/full) for the last several years. By the way, I've found that a dove can fly through #8s, but 7 1/2s tend to bring'em on down. Our season in Virginia begins on September 2nd; I'll hunt with the same guys I've hunted with for 50 years.

charlie cleveland 08-01-2017 09:36 PM

frank i too have been with the same hunting buddies for many years a few new guys come into the circle from time to time... i really like the chokes on your 16 ga...charlie

Frank Childrey 08-02-2017 03:32 AM

Thanks, Charlie. The VH was my father's #1 bird gun; when he gave it to me his only comment was: "You'll get your limit with this one." I've never shot a limit with it, but the first time I took it out, I shot a double on wild birds (bobwhite).
