Destry L. Hoffard 06-01-2017 02:24 PM

I've hunted with them over in the UK, never in the US other than just fooling around shooting some clays.

Mills Morrison 06-01-2017 03:42 PM

I have killed a turkey with mine. That was a hoot for sure. Would like to take it duck hunting, but would have to go to the UK like Destry.

John Dallas 06-01-2017 05:34 PM

Does anyone know if an 8 gauge is legal for ducks in Canada?

Bill Murphy 06-01-2017 05:48 PM

I can't wait for the answer to that question.

Rick Losey 06-01-2017 06:52 PM

I thought it was because if the treaty

But then again I was surprised to find out sink boxes are still used in Nova Scotia

Nope ,pretty much same rules as you guys

charlie cleveland 06-02-2017 04:43 PM

i hope to get hunting this fall with the 8 ga just bought from precision loading 500 once fired remington hulls...the new winchester hulls are kinda pricey but the load looks real good as you can see the load....if any body needs hulls for the 8 ga now is the time to get some they even got some wads too....you really need some thing to heat up the mouth of these hulls dont they are hard to reloadanybody out there got some suggestions on this....

Phillip Carr 06-02-2017 06:51 PM

Charlie I have shot 2 turkeys in New Mexico with mine, still have not shot a Gobbler in AZ. Called in and shot a coyote, and a few Eurasian dove have been taken. Fun gun but pretty heavy for the country we hunt around here. It's a Quality R top lever hammer gun on a 7 frame with 36" Twist barrels patterned for " Goose Shot"

charlie cleveland 06-03-2017 06:46 PM

phil i hope you get a shot in arizonia some day i know what you mean about heavy to tote..i ve never heard of a parker to bepattered for goose shot this really intriges me....charlie

Dennis E. Jones 06-03-2017 07:34 PM

8 bores are not legal for any game birds here in Oregon but you could hunt deer or elk with them. I used mine one day shooting feral pigeons, the first shot it doubled on me, can't tell you if I hit the pigeon or not. I may get it out again some day if I can find more pigeons.

wayne goerres 06-03-2017 09:10 PM

Does Oregon now have a complete lead ban in effect.

Phillip Carr 06-04-2017 12:08 AM

Charlie I wonder what they considered Goose Shot, the letet states this rather than a shot size and percentage.

As of now no, lead is still legal for hunting in most areas, except for water fowl, but one biologist stated if one California Condor is seen anywhere in Oregon lead for hunting will be banned. Hope they prosper but well south of the California/Oregon border.

charlie cleveland 06-04-2017 07:29 PM

phil i think the goose shot would probably be no 2 s or bb shot size..what does anybody else think of the goose shot size..i have some old shell boxes here with the recommened size of shot for that game bird.i tried to find a box with the listed sizes but as always cannot find them...is any body else got a gun listed for geese shooting...did find a box of winchester record 3 1/2 inch 10 ga that was stated not for 40 yard shooting....charlie

Jim DiSpagno 06-04-2017 08:22 PM

Phil, somewhere in my Dads stuff is an old paper 12 ga shell that says no.2 goose load

CraigThompson 06-05-2017 08:42 AM

I wonder if they're "legal" on an Indian Reservation in the USA .

Destry L. Hoffard 06-05-2017 11:58 AM

Anything is legal on Indian Reservations as they aren't technically the USA. Now I'm sure a Game Warden would disagree, but they can't go there so they aren't in control. That said, would I haul an 8 gauge to one just to try to kill a bird with it? Unlikely

DLH

Destry L. Hoffard 06-05-2017 12:00 PM

As far as 8 gauge guns go, if you aren't shooting at least 2 1/2 ounces out of one, you're shooting a 10 gauge anyway.

All the old shell boxes say #2 and BB for geese.

We shot some high geese in Scotland with AAA which is essentially buckshot.

DLH

charlie cleveland 06-05-2017 06:21 PM

i m glad you posted about the goose size shot..i ve got some boxes around here some where that its listed on...how did that aaa shot do on those birds...charlie

Sam Ogle 06-12-2017 10:15 AM

I would love the Feds to legalize the old 8 gauges; but we know what will happen: The firearm manufacturers would immediately petition to legalize "modern" 8 gauges shooting 5" shells with 3 ounces of lead for turkeys.
The "Super Nasty Black Eagle" would be born.
Sam Ogle, Lincoln, NE

Destry L. Hoffard 06-12-2017 03:38 PM

My friend "The Captain" killed a pair of greylag with AAA that were so high it was hard to believe. Probably the 2nd highest geese I've ever seen shot.

DLH

charlie cleveland 06-13-2017 11:28 AM

what was the highest shot you have seen shot on geese destry..and how high do you think this 2nd highest was and what guns and gauges were used...charlie

Destry L. Hoffard 06-13-2017 02:38 PM

I've seen a guide in Scotland kill geese with a 12 gauge Browning Autoloader using Winchester XX #4 in 3 inch so high you couldn't really believe it. I'd say pushing over 90 yards. And it wasn't an accident, he could do it every time.

Barry killed a right and left on Greylag geese with a Tolley hammer 8 gauge using AAA shot that was 85 yards if it was a foot.

I killed a mallard drake with a Holland and Holland hammer 4 bore using BB shot that was 87 big steps to where it fell straight down.

charlie cleveland 06-13-2017 07:18 PM

thanks destry that is truly some fine shots..would have loved to have seen you shooting that 4 bore....charlie

Robert Geddes 06-23-2017 08:56 AM

Destry, I think you'd enjoy the Cape Barren Geese on Flinders Island; I pulled down a looong shot with a single 8 in January...

Destry L. Hoffard 06-23-2017 02:33 PM

That's actually a trip I've considered making. But the flight is just soooooo long.....

Did you get to shoot peacock too?

Destry

Robert Geddes 06-23-2017 05:44 PM

Apparently it's not the best time of year, but a couple of us did put in some effort, and we did get a peacock; one of the nicest birds I've ever eaten, and a wealth of fly tying and arrow fletching material. Also put up a massive white boar, but didn't get him, and we didn't chase the turkeys, either.
I'll probably get a group going again for January 2019. Ducks are on the rice crops in the Riverina at that time of year, too... Plenty of time to save up, and plenty of stuff to have a shot at, if you do decide to make the trip. Could probably find a bed for you here too.

Destry L. Hoffard 06-23-2017 05:48 PM

I get your seasons confused. Isn't January in the middle of your summertime? What's the weather like? Is it a guided trip? Non toxic shot?

DLH

Robert Geddes 06-23-2017 06:04 PM

Yes, January is summer here, but Flinders is far enough south and surrounded by enough ocean to be pretty mild.
It's guided, and he knows exactly how and where to place the guns and push the birds to get some great shooting. He supplies 1 1/4 lead #2 or BB - unless you take something weird to shoot, like I do, and take my own 10ga or 8ga cartridges.

I thought peacocks were just for decoration. Didn't know anyone hunted them.

Destry L. Hoffard 06-23-2017 11:44 PM

I'm interested, particularly if there's also duck shooting. Drop me a PM if you don't mind with some costs and details.

Craig Larter 06-24-2017 05:04 PM

Boy I would buy a 8ga in a heart beat if they were legal for waterfowl in the US. But at my age I do not believe that will ever happen, so I have two 6 frame tens that are stand ins.

Bill Murphy 06-24-2017 06:14 PM

Craig, if you want to go on an eight gauge hunt, I will lend you a Parker eight gauge to take. I think you would like my 30" ten pound DH grade unless you want to shoot a hammer gun, then I would lend you a great 34" hammer gun. I'm way beyond hunting with these guns.

charlie cleveland 06-24-2017 08:39 PM

i ve never hunted waterfowl with the 8 ga but i ve used it on squirls crows deer turkey....i too am getting old now i hunt out of my folding chair i go about 50 yards at a time...charlie
