Value for Parker PH 12 ga SXS with parker steel barrels
 

Hi all please forgive me i'm a newbie when it comes to Parker Bros shotguns,i'm trying to help a friend find out the value of his shotgun so he can get a fair price for it.
The shotgun is a PH model with Parker steel 30" barrels,frame size is 2,barrel weight is 4lbs 1oz,serial #202201.Bluing on barrels is very good +,very nice grain in the wood,but it does have some dings and scratches as any hunting gun would have.From what i read their where only 1339 PH models made with Parker steel barrels,it was made in 1922-23 and has double triggers.i was told it has the factory correct(dogs head) buttplate and grip cap,proper tang safety and really nice engraving for this model.Any help or info would be greatly appreciated,pics are available with your email,thanks in advance.

Looks to me like the stocks been cut and a different butt plate installed.
Unless those white lines and chips in the wood are just in the picture?

Yup, flat butt surface indicating that the gun is not an original butt plate gun unless it was cut for a pad. I am guessing that the length of this stock from the middle of front trigger to the middle of the buttplate is somewhat less than 14". With a nice original type pad installed professionally, crooked screws fixed, it will be a nice gun that will more than fit in with George's value estimate. All values are contingent on barrel measurements and originality. Great wood on this gun.

Best bet would be put it on Gun Broker since your friend wants to sell it and that will tell you what the market price is.

Perry: Everthing about the gun looks original except the butt which appears to have had a non-original buttplate installed. "The Book" has SN 202201 as a PP Grade (Grade 1 w/ Parker Special Steel barrels) hammerless, no extras (such as ejectors), capped pistol grip stock, 12 gauge w/ 30 inch barrels, made in 1923. I think that my estimate of value holds. You might want to order a letter from PGCA. It would tell you the original stock measurements and perhaps who ordered it.

That would be "Parker Steel" barrels on a PH Grade 1 as "Parker Special Steel" barrels were used on the GH or Grade 2 guns.

I know... just a technicality.

A whole lot of figure in that stock.... maybe an early 60s or 70's restock.....

That gun looks amazingly similar to my PHPS in the 207000 range;even the remaining case color on the tang is the same. Mine also has interesting but not exotic grain in the butt. It is a straight grip with very high dimensions. It has a pad fitted to a slightly curved butt.
Mark has indicated that many PHPS guns show as PHPT, but sometimes have a "black barrel " note.

Austin, do you and Mark take that to mean those guns with that note have twist barrels that were rust blued?

I have a PH 12 with 30" twist barrels, DT No 2 frame, 12.5% tool steel bolt design, PGCA lettered to 1902- but with orginal length stock to DHBP, PG- good modern dims for me (surprising as many 1900 era field Parkers had a lot of drop- older shooting style)-- I had Brad check out the barrels, use either 2.5 RST or light 2.75 AA loads- patterns show about full right barrel and imp. mod left- and they pattern a tad high-

I like it- have dropped many barn pigeons and pest birdies with it since I bought it in March this year- But as I have 4 other 12 side-by-sides with that barrel length- well- but after I shot 16 yd. trap (wanted to try wobblers too) at Lapeer- it's a "Keeper" as I can see the going away clay over the muzzles and bust it into pieces- almost automatically-

So- next year, now that I have been to my first ever "Yooper" and am hooked for life on that event- I'll use it for the pigeon ring and balloon busting derby-

Why would anyone re-blue Twist or Damascus pattern barrels anyway?:whistle:

I just recently bought this gun. I pick it up Monday at my FFL dealer. I will find someone one to see if I should get stock replaced. I love the gun Its my first parker.

Congratulations Brian! I wondered why the older thread was resurrected - and frankly, can't find a better reason. I noted Austin replied years ago...

Not sure who Austin is but it sounds like he is a good guy. could anyone of you guys tell me where or who I should have look at my parker PH to decide abount stock and butt plate replacement? I relly love the gun and want to do the right thing for it. I live in New Jersey. Thanks for any response. Brian

Less is more on restoration. Renew the thread to get more advice. I don't think the stock needs to be replaced. It is wonderful in its present condition.

The Meriden PH and GH guns had figured American black walnut that would often rival the figure of the Circassian walnut used on DH and CH guns.
