VH 28

This gun appears to have lots going for it, but it sure seems to be agressively priced? Thoughts

Thanks

Fred

I have a hard time believing the "all original" claim when I view the CC and checkering. But, it is a nice gun that I wouldn't mind owning it.

Dave Fuller 07-07-2010 07:58 PM

It does not look original to me. Screws are not timed. Colors look flakey, like some repro tend to exhibit. That said, its a nice little gun.

Dave Suponski 07-07-2010 08:05 PM

Looks to me to be old Turnbull colors...Only about $15,000 to much....

Rich Anderson 07-07-2010 08:21 PM

A VH for $22K:shock: I don't know what those boys are smoking up in Maine but they should be selling that.

Cabelas markup is targeted at 30%. IF they paid $15K for that gun I have one I'll sell them:whistle:

Dean Romig 07-07-2010 10:27 PM

SHAZAAM!!!! I think it's time to sell my VHE 00-frame 28 ga. :biglaugh:

I'll stop by Cabela's on Friday night on my way to the lake and take a look at it.

Somebody remind me Monday morning to report back with my findings. (I know I'll forget - I left a jug of Jack Daniel's about half-full when I departed Sunday night and I plan to finish it Saturday night if it kills me.) There are a couple of 30" twenty ga. Parkers in their racks that, judging by the tag prices, they're pretty proud of.

charlie cleveland 07-08-2010 07:34 AM

ive always wanted me a parker 28 ga but alas i think ive waitedto long. when things getto pricey a person has just got to dream sometimes. charlie

Dave Miles 07-08-2010 08:00 AM

Charlie, buy yourself a 28 gauge Parker Repro and be Happy.
They shoot just as good as the originals.

Rich Anderson 07-08-2010 08:58 AM

Charlie, Dave is right about the Repos. They are good guns and at a much more attractive price. If you want a little nicer repo look at www.greensguns. Chuck takes them a step farther as he recuts the engraveing by hand, reshapes the stock, and puts a much nicer case color to them.

Francis Morin 07-08-2010 09:38 AM

Maine has some Mountains, like Lobster and sea-ducks?

So perhaps the gun library schleppers at the Maine Cabela's are 'doin' some doobie" whilst a pricin' non-original Paaaarkaaas- Sort of a "Colorado Rocky Mt. High (priced) moves Eastward--

I've been twice to the Mi Dundee Cabela's Gun Library, and I was "under-whelmed" to say the least- none of their used and way overpriced shotguns have a gunsmith safety check- I found a 12 3E Smith- the safety slide was dis-engaged, so NO safety- when I mentioned this to the sales dude, I might as well have been speaking Urdu--

$22K in my pocket free and clear- spend as I wish, but on guns and ammo to shoot (clays or game birds with) not to hoard in a Gun Safe for "investment"- I'd rather buy a clean Remington VHE 12 Parker and a ton of RST No. 8's, have enough left for a three day bird hunt at one of the fancy ND or SD Lodges too- 28 gauge- like a .410 on steriods maybe???:whistle::whistle:

Harry Collins 07-08-2010 10:33 AM

Dean,

Save a little of that Tennessee Whiskey for Sunday morning. Everyone will confuse you for an Episcopalian.....and if you find Cabela's is dishing out 15K for old VH 28 gauges they can have mine.

Harry

Scott Groff 07-08-2010 12:36 PM

Appears they opened the new Blue Book and priced it right out of there.

Rich Anderson 07-08-2010 10:27 PM

There is a very nice VHE 28 at Greens guns in the $15K range.

Francis there is nothing wrong with the 28 for birds or clays. I picked up a nice VHE 28 at the U.P. about 5yrs ago. I shoot lots of birds and some clays with it.

Arn't you without a Parker at this time??

Dean Romig 07-08-2010 10:32 PM

A 28 ga. is my ideal gun for skeet, a bit of SC and of course pa'tridge an' woodcock.

Francis Morin 07-08-2010 10:38 PM

Not completely "Bereft- Parker-wise"

But the 28 gauges- both the shells and the doubles that burn them up so well on the clays- humm- I can shoot a whole ton more by using my 12's- I'm so used to their weight and feel (I love that 8 lb. 2E Smith with the 32" VR barrels) that the little 16- O frame 26" PH I traded away at the UP Shoot felt like a 28- to me. Also, as I prefer splinter forearms on my doubles (unless I get real serious about the two-man flurry derby, then a modified beavertail might get the nod) the width of a 12 double- my fingers don't interfere with my sight over the barrels- but with the smaller barrels of a 28- But I'll tell you what- if I get really lucky and win the 12 GHE DAM raffle gun this Sept, I'll put it out for trade against a nice Parker Repro DHE- 28 gauge 26" barrels IC/Mod- straight hand stock, DT, field style beavertail forearm (like the early M21 "Kidney pattern") and with nice solid red Silvers pad with a 14.5" LOP and no cast- in case- then after I've had it and shot it on clays for a few seasons, I'll let you know what I think- just please remember- I am a devout waterfowl and pheasant hunter- and in my lexicon, them birds spells 12 gauge (to me anyway)!:bigbye::bigbye::bigbye:

Rich Anderson 07-09-2010 03:03 PM

I can reload my 28's for less than a 12. Seeing as I won a case of RST 28's at Hausmanns, ammo won't be a problem for quite a while:). I would rather run a 22 or 23 at skeet with a 28 than 24-25 with a 12.

My VHE is straight stock, splinter forarm and double trigger. I have no problem seeing down those 28 inch skeet choked tubes.

Dave Suponski 07-09-2010 03:28 PM

Please send said gun to Connecticut......

Rich Anderson 07-09-2010 03:38 PM

NO!:nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono ::nono::nono::nono::rotf:

Dave Suponski 07-09-2010 03:45 PM

Rich Anderson 07-09-2010 03:49 PM

Suppose you throw in a Cuban cigar and 20K....NO!:nono::nono::nono::nono:

Dave Suponski 07-09-2010 04:49 PM

This isn't over yet Mr. Anderson.....How about willing it to me?....

Rich Anderson 07-09-2010 05:54 PM

So lets see if I have this correct. I don't want to sell the gun so your willing to to wait untill I become Vulture food to get it?

When I'm dead you want the 28 and another "friend" wants the GHE 16 damascuss. Well what the Hell are friends for anyway:rotf:

Dave Suponski 07-09-2010 09:01 PM

Exactly.....See what good buddies ya got......:biglaugh:

Rich Anderson 07-09-2010 11:07 PM

I hate to tell you this but your not Charlton Heston so you can't pry it from my cold dead hands........good try though:rotf:

Francis Morin 07-10-2010 08:42 AM

Cigars-- now we are getting serious

I had some nice communication with Morris Baker just before the Yooper- we had never met, but he was planning to attend and bestow a few fine Havanas to his many friends. Alex and Jill were there, and explained that some family concerns kept him back in PA this time--I was hoping to see the 20 VH that was once the pet grouse gun of the late Burton L. Spiller- I am sure that it is in good hands with our friend Morris, and that he will use it and treasure it as well.

Did get a chance to meet Morris' friend and grouse guide from MN- he had a fine collection of German doubles, rifles and drillings as well, and told me some stories about his job with the MN DNR in killing rogue black bears and feral wolves--he just had the look of a man who had spent most of his life in some really tough country and had come out on top- sorta like the lines from the late poet Robert W. Service: "Oh, I have clinched and closed with the naked North, I've learned to defy and defend- shoulder to shoulder we have fought it out, but the North must win in the end"!!

Dean Romig 07-10-2010 03:33 PM

For Fred Lowe and other interested parties re: the Cabela's VH 28 ga. that was the gun of interest in starting this thread...

I dropped into Cabela's in Scarborough, ME on Friday evening specifically to examine this gun and as I walked into the Gun Library I spied Scott, Bill and Pete making a deal on a trap gun. We chatted a bit and then I took out the VH 28 and found it to be nothing more than a restocked and refinished gun, probably redone a while back. It is made on a 00-frame, has 26" barrels and extractors and in my opinion a buttplate introduced a bit later than this gun was made, i.e., no spur. It is a decent gun but the price Cabela's is asking is ionospheric in my opinion.

Dave Suponski 07-10-2010 06:31 PM

Dean,Would you care to describe....ionospheric? Is that really a word?

Rich Anderson 07-10-2010 08:37 PM

If someone is in the mkt for a nice 28 (NO Dave S not min:pe) Chuck Brunner at Greens guns has a VHE and I believe there is a nice VH at CSM. Both are very nice and a lot less $$$ than the Cabelas gun.

Dean Romig 07-10-2010 10:17 PM

Dave, ionospheric is so high it is impossible for humans to find sustainable oxygen.

Dave Suponski 07-11-2010 08:48 AM

Thank You for the education Mr. Romig......

Francis Morin 07-11-2010 09:02 AM

Hey- that's why he's a "Dean"

As maybe in Merle Haggard's song-- "and they all respect the College dean"-- So- take two identical DHE skeet guns fully optioned, made in Ilion in 1936- both NIB with all the papers and etc-- (as long as we are dreaming, let's dream big) which is worth more on the market today- the 28 gauge or the .410??:whistle:

Bill Murphy 07-11-2010 10:55 AM

Francis, the 28, maybe $45,000, the .410, closer to $80,000, as long as we're dreaming. I could be way off, but the .410 is always more expensive, regardless of grade or condition.

Eric Eis 07-11-2010 11:42 AM

No Bill I think you are on maybe a little low on both.

Francis Morin 07-11-2010 04:56 PM

Wow-

Almost like a scaled down versiopn of what the late IL Sen. Everett Dirksen used to say: "A few million here, a few million, and after a while, you're talkin' real serious money"-- $80K for a .410 optioned and NIB- Mama Mia- that's some a spicy meat ball, ey?? Wow:eek::eek:- guess I'll stay in the "cheap seats" and buy/shoot lower graded 12's with DT--:banghead:

Bill Murphy 07-11-2010 07:04 PM

I thought someone would pipe in and tell me I was way low. I agree that I may be way off the money. However, I want to know more about John Dunkle's field used skeet configured gun. I have one that gives "field used" a new meaning. OK, John, will you be sending your less than mint .410 to the cleaners or are you hunting with it like I am with mine?

Rich Anderson 07-11-2010 10:44 PM

DAve IF I sell the VHE 28 I'll be ionspheric:rotf:.

Dunkel stole that sweet little 410 for short money...so the story goes. I guess it pays to be in the right place at the right time. Someday I hope I get there:whistle:

Hi Bill..!

Actually - I've used it both at the skeet range and in the field.. Honestly - as you know - they are like "little wands" in hand and just feel "right"?? Mine would never be confused with NIB or "minty", but rather - it get's loved and shot all the time? As well, if I bring it along at the skeet range - I do let other Parker enthusiasts shoot it a round or two if they'd like? Frankly - most shoot it better than I do - which isn't saying too much

Best to you Bill!

John

Hey Dean!

A great set of "eyes" - thanks!! As well - while you were there, did you see this GH listed for $4,000? I'd be interested in the collective thoughts of the forum members, as I have a few GHs and..???..??!

Best to all for a wonderful evening!

John

Dean Romig 07-13-2010 04:23 PM

Didn't see that one John. Don't know how I could have missed it. I'm going North again Friday night and I'll stop and take a look.

Dean
