Gearing Up for Tom!

Well, Spring turkey season is almost upon us. Time to gather all of the gear and tune-up the calls.

It should be a great season here in Texas as we have had three wet winters followed by wet springs in a row. It definitely will be a hot one. Since January 1st we have had 20+ days in the 80's!

This season, I will be using a straight grip 1923 PH, 12 ga. with 30" Parker Steel barrels. RST 2 1/2" lite roll crimped 1 1/16 oz #5's should do the trick.

Good luck to all you turkey hunters!

Thanks. with our turkey population is way down and my hearing is getting worst all the time I will take all the luck I can get. Will be trying 1906 GH 10 Ga. with RST 1 1/4 of 4's for the first time. May need a gun bearer that can hear.

I'm looking forward to going up on the Clearwater in North Central Idaho and going after some Merriam's on opening weekend.

Me and a fellow that I work with are going up there and hunt with his boys. Both of his sons live and work up there in Priest, ID.

I haven't decided if I'm using my NH 10 with 32" barrels or my DH 12 with 30" barrels. Since I have 2 tags, I might take them both and try to get one with each.

I do want to get at least one with a Parker. I haven't ever done that before.

I've been using the Abby Gun for a few years which is a heavily tweaked 12 Gauge Sterly with RST number 6's.

I'll be using the 10 gauge with brass shells and black powder loads.

Outstanding hammer gun ! Best of luck for a safe and fun season.

I have several new guns I want to try out. I hope at least one of them gets a gobbler.

Charlie they haven't broken up yet. There are three long beards running together with nary a hen in sight. I think we are still a couple of weeks away from things starting to really happen. Going to get real cold again this weekend and that has slowed mother nature down.

On my way to a local gun show Saturday morning in a roadside meadow were 10 hens and a good longbeard in full strut.

Dean, that's a bad ratio for calling that Gobbler off of all those hens, unless those 10 hens look like the girl I used to date (but didn't marry) a long long time ago.

Dean Romig 03-07-2017 04:31 PM

My first ever long beard was with a harem of 16 hens. Read about it in Parker Pages, Autumn 2004.

I'm gonna use my NID Ithaca 16 again this year. Been seeing lots of birds this year. Can't hardly wait!

Todd Schrock 03-08-2017 11:42 AM

Shawn, what loads will you be using in the NID 16?

Shawn Wayment 03-08-2017 12:03 PM

Todd...I use Fiocchi copperplated Golden Pheasant loads 2&3/4 with 6 shot

That should roll him. Those are good loads. Those NID were tank like and can shoot just about anything. I'm guessing its choked full/mod which seems like the norm.
