The Goose

Sunday morning photos of a nice decoy I found on craig list. It looks like the original hardware. The body is cork and the head is wood. Maybe glass eyes.

very nice Angel

i seem to have a soft spot for goose decoys - i love that one

i thought about this one (which is doubtful it ever was a field decoy as the seller claimed) for too long at an antique show last weekend
the seller said he had another at home and would contact me- never heard back

Rick, that's beautiful. Too bad he didn't get back to you.

Rick Losey 02-19-2017 11:47 AM

there is another show in that area in a few weeks - since he sold one - i hope he'll bring the other - the issue with goose decoys is flat spaces to display them :)

a poor cell phone pic- but this is one of my favorites

The story is much too long to tell properly here, but the short form is that some of the decoys I carved years ago showed up on ebay. The seller sent back to me for free, and even paid the $75 shipping. (Oh by the way, I did sent him a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label)

all of the decoys pictured are beautiful...charlie

Angel, that goose decoy of yours looks to be an LL Bean decoy made for Bean's by a company located also in Freeport, Maine. I once got a tour of their facility and saw how they made their cork decoys for Beans.

Angel Cruz 02-19-2017 03:25 PM

Allen, thanks for that bit of info.
Big D, you lucky I didn't see those, I would have been all over them.

John Dallas 02-19-2017 04:16 PM

Angel - The ducks have gone to my kids (as if they needed more) but for $375, I'll ship the geese to you. Only issue is that I won't be able to get to them until April

James J. Roberts 02-19-2017 04:27 PM

Allen is correct your Brant is an L.L.Bean decoy carved by George Soule. J.J.

Angel Cruz 02-19-2017 06:23 PM

Thanks JJ. I knew I would get some info here. The knowledge of this group always surprises me.
Yo Big D, I'll take them!!!

John Dallas 02-19-2017 06:39 PM

Thx. Angel Let me get back, and get them packed before you start writing a check

Angel Cruz 02-19-2017 08:07 PM

No problem, thanks!!

Man, those are some awesome decoys guys! I had my eye on a Big Sky Carvers preening goose on the bay; it was a bit more than I wanted to pay. I debated about it for days and finally the auction ended with no bids. Then I saw it was relisted so I checked it out; the seller dropped the price by half and it sold the same day! I was crushed, but classic case of "if you snooze you lose!"

Here's a preener which I carved about 30 years ago. he's been guarding the front hall since, so is beginning to show his age.

James J. Roberts 04-03-2017 04:45 PM

What ever you do when displaying your decoys keep them out of the reach of your dog, they just love chewing on the beak and the tail.:cuss: J.J.

Bill Murphy 04-03-2017 04:55 PM

My decoys are never in range of a bird dog or a retriever. Good point, JJ.

JJ - Where were you 35 years ago? Perhaps you could have taught Abby a more respectful way to treat a Chesapeake deke

Fred Lauer 04-04-2017 10:45 PM

My Chesapeake Sal has a personal best of 4 decoy bills in a half hour. Not a big deal if you are a carver but some coarse language and a mild reinforcement put an end to that behavior.
