Hunting in OK
1 Attachment(s)
Having a great time hunting near the OK Panhandle for Bob White. It's rugged country and the temps are in the mid 70's. Russell Lindsay, Tom Wooden, Charlie Herzog and Bruce Day are providing plenty of material for an upcoming installment of the Parker Chronicles.

Look forward to seeing the article

Can't wait!! Mike always does such a good job of describing what it is that we love about hunting with a double gun.....

Dog casualty for one of Charlie's setters. Lost a lot of blood so lots of red meat and water tonight and stay in the kennel for a few days. Then his second setter rolled in a dead porcupine and his third setter got stuck all along the side by a live, now dead, porcupine.
We surmise that Charlie's dog took a tree staub in the mouth. He runs hard with his mouth open and tongue hanging out. Had to be a heck of a hole. |
Bruce, I am always apprehensive about porcupine encounters with Grace - they're all over the place where I hunt.
What was the nature of the injury with the setter in the picture? . |

Warm weather but the dogs found a way to cool off.

Beaver River.

Looks like a great time. When we get the kids a little more settled, we want to travel to places like that for hunting

Mike Franzen and Tom Wooden.
Mike, Triple and Bert, all tuckered out after an 18 covey day. Note the absence of trees to spoil the view. |
It was so stinkin cold and windy I was holding on to Tom to warm up. That bottom pic is me applying copious amounts of Charlie's famous Udder Cream to my hands. We walked 10 1/2 miles today chasing Bob White. This is a hunt I'll never forget. Me and the dogs are going to sleep well tonight.
|
10 miles that will make the old lower back... looks like a grand time. Charlie's dog get better?
|
Major made a full recovery and is in good shape. Blood on a big white dog looks bad.
|
90 degrees today so done by 1pm. Another 12 coveys. Then Dairy Queen.
The dogs are tapped out after five days of hard hunting. We had six dogs, we could have used ten. |

Quail country.
Dog tired. We walked a little over 10 miles on our high day, the dogs ran several times that. |

It's hard, no-frills country but I love it out there. The trees don't provide much shade though.
|
We have groves of those skinny white trees. The power is transferred east .
Several years ago when proposals were being made to place wind turbines on Nantucket Island, locals protested that the view would be ruined and urged that wind turbines be placed in the central US because " no one lives out there". |

Common sense lobbying.... . |
Looked like fun. Unfortunately yall are at the wrong end of Oklahoma/Texas border.
|
So, all those covies... Have you gotten any birds yet? I haven't seen a bird picture here yet...

Here is a bird picture. We did fine. But on these I messed up and shot a female.
And a photo of Charlie with his favorite quail gun, 20ga. |
Nice bird pic Bruce! You leave the lens cap on???
update: ok, now it comes up. Wasn't there yesterday. Great pic. They're such pretty little birds. |

Mike goes native. First with Udder Essence, a great conversation starter, then modeling his new hat.
|
Out East we use "Bag Balm" for all kinds of remedies and preventions and I assume you might be using it against wind burn?
Just a guess but I think that sombrero might have been the cause of all those birds flushing at 100 yards or more... . |
mike that sure is a fancy hat for a bird hunter...you kinda look like old poncho and cisco...charlie
|
Bag Balm is just some amazing stuff. I use it on myself and the dogs and has cured a case of hot spots on my lab. It is better than any hand cream I have ever used.
|
Bruce Day is a dangerous man with a camera. You never know when he's going to shoot you. With that sombrero and a little more tan I look like I could make a run for the border. The use of Udder Cream for wind burn was never even remotely suggested in one of our many discussions for its potential uses. I'm half afraid to use it. It's such a strange gift ;)
|
Yes Mike, if you use it enough a tendency will develop to head to the closest milking parlor twice a day.
|
If you want to keep the greasy factor down a bit a combination of bag balm and Lubriderm is incredible for dry cracked hands. The best cure though is to just drink more water - and that's straight water, not beer, and no J Daniels - than you can possibly hold. That's the real key.

So how does frequent urination help dry cracked hands? . |

Sadly, this was Triple my Lewellin setter's last hunt. She died this morning. She led a good life, many days in the field from the Oklahoma quail plains, throughout the Great Plains, Montana, grouse in Minnesota. Many many birds and wonderful adventures and memories.
A difficult day. |
What a beautiful dog and obviously a great hunting companion. Sorry for your loss.
|
With 18 coveys of birds who needs trees !
|
I'm very sorry to learn of Triple's death.
. |
We always say no more but can't live without their companionship and devotion to their work. A difficult day, indeed. We share your loss.
|
Sorry to hear the news, Bruce
|
Bruce, Im sorry for your loss. its never easy but you can take solace in knowing you were her best friend and vise versa. My prayers are with you.Jim

The sentiments are much appreciated. She was a fine dog that has now joined the list of wonderful hunters that I have been blessed to accompany me in my life. I have a fine Elhew pointer to take me through the hunting season but with the kind of hunting I do I need a pair, so I have made arrangements to pick up a new Lewellin pup from Houdini kennels in Minnesota in September. She will be 6 and 7 months old in Jan and Feb, old enough to start working 100 or more quail a day out towards the Panhandle.
I believe the best way to get a young dog going fast is to get them on wild birds early and paired with an experienced older dog that knows how to approach and hold without jumping birds. I like them hot blooded and big running in open country. |
With that many bird contacts, she will do fine. I always liked taking a young dog to the UP when the woodcock flights were in. I would take up a young pup and bring home a seasoned gun dog.
Betty will be making her 12th appearance in the UP this fall and I cant imagine being there without her, my new pup Willow, is 5 weeks old today and will ride along this year. Sorry to hear about Triplett. |
