Another interesting Hammergun

Have no stake in gun, other than I would like to own it. GB 617858866 Book shows grade 3 straight grip 10 w/28" barrels. This is a grade 4 with pistol grip and rubber butt! S/N 36136 Any thoughts?

Dean Romig 02-06-2017 03:41 PM

The books have been wrong before. It is obviously a Grade 4 with Bernard barrels certainly heavy enough to be a 10 gauge. Nice candidate for a full resto.

Brian Dudley 02-06-2017 08:19 PM

Now that is a well worn grade 4. I wonder how bad the bores are.
Interesting that the butt does not have an ssbp. The stock is original. The butt treatment likely was special order.

Frank Cronin 02-06-2017 08:50 PM

I have a grade 3 10 gauge close to the serial number to this one. It also has the same butt treatment. No mention in letter of being a special order.

Nice looking project for someone. My wife is mad at me for buying 4 guns recently, so I am on thin ice in the new gun department

4 for you and none for her?

Mills Morrison 02-07-2017 11:52 AM

Actually, my seller told me to tell her that 2 were for her, so don't be mad. It didn't work.

Dean Romig 02-07-2017 11:52 AM

Hmmm.... Looks like you'll have to buy another new gun for your wife - and quick, if you want things back to normal at the Morrison house -

.

Mills Morrison 02-07-2017 11:53 AM

There is a new one coming out later this spring that she wants and I will probably get that for her.

Mills Morrison 02-07-2017 01:28 PM

Back to the OP, I hope someone here gets this gun and fixes it up for us to see. I bet those Bernard barrels would really look good if refinished properly.

Ed Blake 02-07-2017 01:48 PM

The auction has ended.

John Dallas 02-07-2017 04:23 PM

Gun has been relisted

Kirk Potter 02-14-2017 10:30 AM

Came really close to pulling the trigger on this last time when their were no bids towards the end.. Ends in 5 minutes and has 1 bid this time.

Mills Morrison 02-14-2017 10:44 AM

It is gone now. Probably just as well as my wife will kill me if I get any more.

Training Mills it's all in the training.......and secrecy:whistle:
The best gun show in the country for double guns is coming to Deep River maybe Julia will find something there.

Mills Morrison 02-14-2017 02:35 PM

Deep River is a target rich environment for sure!

Rich Anderson 02-14-2017 02:36 PM

I'm spending my money before I get there it's safer that way:)

Mills Morrison 02-14-2017 02:38 PM

I tried that, but then great deals kept coming. I thought she would be happy with the 20 gauge I found in Vegas, but I was wrong.

Rich Anderson 02-14-2017 03:08 PM

All you can do is keep trying and the upside will be more guns:rotf: What was the 20 you found?

Mills Morrison 02-14-2017 03:52 PM

The 20 is a well used VH. Not the prettiest gun in the world, but solid and shoots nicely

Back to the subject gun of this thread, I hope someone here picked it up and will share some more info with us. It would be a great restoration candidate

Rich Anderson 02-14-2017 07:24 PM

Congrats on the 20 Mills. It will serve you and your boys well.

I confess I was the high and only bidder on the C grade 10 gauge hammer gun. The current plan for the gun is to have the barrels redone, the cracks in the wood repaired and the checkering freshened up. All the engraving looks sharp in the photos so maybe do nothing with it or highlight it with background antique. One thing that didn't look right to me were the hammer screws. They look smaller than usual and I couldn't see any engraving on them. The seller sent me additional photos of the muzzles and the barrels appear to be original length. TPS lists only one 10 gauge C grade hammer gun with 28" barrels so the gun seems to be a rare one. My plan is to find a 2 gun case to combine this gun and my C 20 hammer gun to make a waterfowl/turkey/dove/upland set. The guns were manufactured 20 years apart but I think it would make a neat set. I will know more once I receive the gun and request a letter.

Dean Romig 02-15-2017 09:39 AM

Please show pictures of the C 20 - I don't recall seeing it before.

Mills Morrison 02-15-2017 09:40 AM

Congratulations Wayne! Sounds like a good plan to me.

Dean,
Here are a couple of photos of the C 20. It was at the Vegas show and annual banquet this year.

Dean Romig 02-15-2017 08:46 PM

A beautiful and unique Parker. That one has Titanic Steel barrels if my memory is correct?

.

Wayne Owens 02-15-2017 08:50 PM

That's correct Dean.

Rich Anderson 02-16-2017 07:55 AM

That C 20 is a VERY nice gun, congrats:bowdown: It's the only one I have ever seen.

Dean Romig 02-16-2017 08:07 AM

It is likely the only one made in that particular grade and configuration.

Chuck Bishop 02-16-2017 09:45 AM

Wayne won the People's Choice Award with this gun this year in Las Vegas.

Attached are photos of the current restoration of the 10 gauge C grade hammer gun purchased on Gunbroker. Next to the 10 gauge is a 20 gauge C grade hammer gun that I am going to combine into a vintage two gun case. The PGCA letter states that the 10 gauge was ordered with its existing 28" Bernard barrels. TPS lists only one 10 gauge with this length of Bernard barrels. However, this isn't the gun listed in the Serialization book so there were at least two ordered that way. Next, the gun will be heading north to have the barrels redone and a few screws repaired. Click on the photos to enlarge.

Dean Romig 05-05-2017 11:06 PM

Great guns to begin with Wayne - can't wait to see them when they're finished.

I have a C top lever hammer gun on the 1-frame with 31" 12 ga. Bernard barrels - the only one known to have been made in this exact configuration. It too is a restoration project.

Wonderful guns b a joy to own!

Gary Carmichael Sr 05-06-2017 09:53 AM

Wayne , that is a beautiful 20 gauge hammer gun, and with Titanic barrels none the less, hope I will get to see it someday in person, again congrats on your purchase of the 10 gauge C grade, hope you find a nice Oak and Leather case for them, I found an old Purdey 2 gun case to fit my 2 guns in Gary

Harry Collins 05-06-2017 01:14 PM

Wayne,

I'm up for adoption!
