parker lifter issue
Hey Guys,
I need a little help. I took my 10 gauge parker lifter to my gunsmith to clean the inside. When I got it home the lifter mechanism will not reset all the way. It is spongy and the barrels are loose? The gun was very tight on face and the lifter lever protruded out of the action a lot farther before I took it to the gunsmith. Could someone please tell me what the issue might be. thank you! Thayne:cool: |
The issue is that you took it to the wrong "gunsmith".
There are gunsmiths in Utah who specialize in Parkers and other classic American SXS guns. I seem to remember there is one in Ogden but his name escapes me at the moment. . |
Yes, they are not real difficult haven't had mine apart for long time. Seems like it took a couple of goes though to get it right. You need to fix your Utah had me scratching my head for a little.

I am trying to think of what the issue could be. The lifter mechanism is very simple with little parts to it.
Something sounds to be preventing the bolt from closing all the way. Maybe the retaining screw in the bolt is not seated all the way and it is hitting the frame when the bolt moves forward. ?? |
I have seen that happen with a burred up screw head on the bolt. Could he have forgot to put the spring back in?
|
No. a left out spring would mean No movement at all. Maybe a broken off, thus shortened, spring.
|
Can you pull the lifter down and tighten the gun?
|
The gunsmith I use is very good. Used him for over 10 years. Before I take it back to him I was hoping someone could tell me what to look for. Possibly the coil spring that the lifter pushes against is kinked or smashed?
thank you |
Take it back, you might accidentally ruin the gun, remember
It's very difficult to get parts |
Not all that difficult.
|
Did you check to see if the extractor seats properly into its recessed cut out?
|
No. I can't pull the lifter down manually. I took the gun back today and he said there was a slotted piece that that could fit either way. He said he must have put it in reversed. Hopefully will not be a big deal. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I will post again when I get it back hopefully working correctly!
|
Evidently it can not go either way...
He must be talking about the bolt. It must be in upside down. :banghead: |
can't tell until I see, but I can take care of it all, my work is warranty and will not alter original look of the gun even if I have to make a new part.

Here is the update. Got the gun back and it works perfectly now. Turns out there is a flat metal key or plate inside where the lifter slides. It can be assembled one of two ways. The gunsmith put it in reversed the the first time. Now everything is good to go. Thanks for everyone's input. I will post again with the next issue under a new topic.

You were correct! Thanks.
|
Thank you for your offer. I figured out the problem. The bolt was upside down. I saw your case hardening pictures. What do you charge to prep the metal and do the case hardening?
