Took the Sterly out to a few old haunts and was surprised to see the bird numbers seemed to be up from last year.. I did also take notice that the Ticks in these same haunts were absolutely TERRIBLE..... Still finding the little lymie bastards... Is it me or are the Ticks getting worse around the Great lakes..
|
looks like good day out
ticks are worse every where- used to be if I found a couple a season it was bad- I have taken that or more off the dogs after a single hunt the last few years even took a couple off one of the barn cats last week- she's 10 and never found one on any of them before- which means they are even in the fields around the house now |
They announced we now have resident Tick populations in Alaska last summer when I was up there.
|
BTW - if you run dogs -you should have a couple of these handy, work like a charm

Here's another product which works well. Used it on our own COB and he did'nt even wimper. I could'nt get the Frontline Plus on him in time.:)

It is not uncommon for me to get 50 from each dog after a run. I hate the little buggers.
|
Here's another one that works. http://tickedoff.com/
Unfortunately I had to use it on myself this morning.:cuss: |
I've noticed the same thing the last few yrs up in PA.
Fortunately in my neck of the woods here in MD it seems to be a down yr for ticks..and I'll take it! |
Here in Oklahoma the ticks have horrible the last several years, warmer weather and more rain this summer.
|
In Vermont's NEK I have never seen a tick since 1956 when I started going there regularly until 4 years ago when I found one on me while sitting in turkey season. Now I see them pretty regularly but not many.
At home in MA I take about 6 - 12 off Grace every time I have her out for a good run. . |
In the 2 plus weeks I spent in the U.P. I only found two wood ticks on Daisy.
|
There were plenty of deer ticks in the UP and also back here in eastern Ohio. I run Seresto collars on the dogs.
Try this: you can buy permethrin 10% at any farm supply store--less than 10 dollars for an 8 ounce bottle. Put 5cc in 1 quart of water in spray bottle and spritz the dog down before putting him out--will make 30-40 gallons this way. Worked great for me, also spray your pant legs before hunting |
Harold, I was told by my vet not to apply permethrin to the dogs. The spray I use for my clothes (.5%) also warns against application to bare skin and pets.
|
Gary, permethrin is marketed for use on dogs--it is however toxic to cats. I will call my brother tomorrow, he is a veterinarian and will give me the scoop on it, and I'll post what I find out.
|
The spray you are using (0.5%) is far greater concentration than what I am using on my dogs. My brother, a vet, says that the concentration I am using is safe.
|
Harold, thanks so much for the info. Now, if you don't mind, what is the concentration expressed as a percentage. I found two different concentrated permethrin products and both have a different concentration level of the active ingredient.
Oops, Harold. I did not read your original post close enough. I now see that the concentrate you purchased was a 10% solution. |
I'm also of the mindset to not spray the dog (not saying I'm educated on the subject).
We use Frontline but in heavily infested areas I'll whip out the dog vest sometimes & give that a spritz or two. I cannot recall which, but I seem to recall that cinnamon or lemon juice mixed w/water is a natural deterrent. I spray myself down w/the hard stuff (on clothes) |
The permethrin 10% is what I bought, and then dilute it 5ml/quart.
From what I hear from my friends in NW Pa, the deer tick population is much worse than in the UP. |
I hunted Potter county PA two times in October....Its infested with the wee little deer ticks now, found a good many on the Gorden setter and a couple that filled! That scares me! I use Advantics and Adams spray, seems to kill most of em. I have never seen a tick in western Kansas...must be too dry there or freezing cold??? SXS Ohio
