FLUID STEEL HAMMER GUNS
 

The Parker Story lists a total of 22 fluid steel hammer guns. Included in this number are the 5 AA's, 1 A, 5 B's, 1 C, and 10 D's. Nothing below a D grade is listed and all of the guns listed are 12 gauge guns. Have any other documented fluid steel hammer guns surfaced since the publishing of The Parker Story?

There are some lower grade guns, but not many.

Jeff, do you have any knowledge of whether these "some, but not many" were originally made with fluid steel barrels or if they had been sent back to have their composite barrels replaced with fluid steel?

The mystery may be partially solved by looking up a lower grade gun in question in the Serialization Book. I have seen such guns, but have no idea whether they were made that way. Now that gunsmiths know how to install hammerless barrels on hammer gun frames, more guns of this type may appear on the horizon. And, of course, some were sent back to the factory for this installation.

The PGCA had one. It has Vulcan Steel barrels.

I currently have in my shop, for mild restoration work, a Titanic Barreled Top Action Grade 3. It is in the 106,000 range and dates to 1900 manufacture.
It is interesting since the Serialization book lists it as a Hammerless gun, which must have just been an error and was gleaned over in the compiling of that book. Since the gun does letter as a hammer gun.

It is a 30" 12g. Top Action Grade 3 and it was ordered with NO rib extension.
This gun MAY or MAY NOT have been factored into the summary of 10 hammer guns with Titanic steel barrels. My guess would be NOT since it is not marked as so in the book.

106000 that has to be one of the last 10 or so D grade top lever hammer guns. Very interesting gun steel barrels and no rib extension.

There was a killer original condition D grade that surfaced a few years ago. It ended up getting restocked and refinished for some bizarre reason.

Does the PGCA's database have the search capability of searching for top lever/lifter hammer guns built with different types of fluid steel barrels? Since the database includes many more guns than the Parker Story lists, it would be very interesting to see how many more fluid steel hammer guns are listed. Maybe an article for the Parker Pages?

I had an opportunity to see this gun at Brian's shop this week, the owner will be very happy in my opinion. The re-blued barrels, stock finish and re-cut checkering are very nicely done. It sure is a nice addition to a collection of top lever hammer guns. Wish it was mine!!

I saw a 32" twenty-gauge in the Serialization book and thought that was it.... but then I re-read the thread and see that Brian shows it as a 30" twelve.

Dean a 20 ga top lever grade 3 is very rare but a 32 inch gun must be unique.

Dean, The gun you show looks to be a grade 4 with some unique engraving if it is a 20 gauge 32" gun then it is a very rare hammer gun indeed!

Gary, I don't know about the barrel length but I have in my notes that it is a 20 gauge.
