I killed my first squirrels with a Lefever Nitro Special nearly 50 years ago.
The gun is still in my safe.

the lefever nitro was a great gun and deadly in the hands of a squirl hunter...charlie

I've never cared for purple; nice to see those red 16ga hulls. My dad always shot Remington Shur-shot or Winchester Rangers, so 16ga hulls will always be green or red to me. Neat bag too!

Well Phil when purple is all you got purple is what you shoot :).

Delighted that someone who shoots in Scotland is not above a good treerat hunt.

Destry L. Hoffard 09-12-2016 11:44 PM

My first game ever was tree rats, and they're also my favorite on the table. I ain't uppity, I just get around. Hah!

The bag was an estate sale score ages ago. It's Canadian military, has a removeable rubberized liner. Literally the perfect game bag.

Phil Yearout 09-13-2016 02:59 PM

I have a Brady with removable rubber liner that I use for fishing; yours looks a bit bigger.

Destry L. Hoffard 09-13-2016 04:38 PM

It will hold five squirrels, a can of bug dope, and a half roll of toilet paper no problem.

Richard Flanders 09-16-2016 08:34 PM

I agree with you Destry that few things beat treerats as table fare. I haven't had a good squirrel stew in a long time.

John Dallas 09-16-2016 09:32 PM

At our cabin, we have reds, blacks, and grays eating up our bird seed. They all get a pass, except the reds. Those destructive little buggers get a dose of .177 chest pain

Richard Flanders 09-16-2016 09:48 PM

When I go out my door and hear a red squirrel, they're toast. I get every single one of them, 27 last summer, 16 this summer; another neighbor claims 50. I use CCI Low Noise or CB shorts, both of which are v quiet.

John Dallas 09-16-2016 09:57 PM

Mine go into the north branch of the Au Sable. Ultimately, they become fish food

Richard Flanders 09-16-2016 10:02 PM

Mine go into the back yard where ravens or foxes find them. I have very fond memories of wading the Ausable for a couple of miles and trout fishing. What a perfect trout stream.

Speaking of squirrel hunting I just finished Cogan's Woods by Ron Ellis. Nice read.
