Cheddite/ RST 1oz 16ga recipe
Does anyone have a tested 1oz load for reloading 2.5" RST Shells?
Thanks in advance. |
I have looked thru all my computer files from the 16 ga group and could not find any 1 oz listings using RST/cheddite hulls. I have been loading alot of 2 1/2" hulls, but am using only 7/8 and 3/4 oz loads. You would probably need to use the SG16 wad for this, as the DR16 wad sits too high( I cant even get 7/8 oz to fit in a short 16 using DR16--but it is great for 3/4 oz loads. I load all my 1 oz using 2 3/4 " hulls. Hope someone can help you out.

use the short Gulandi 16 wads from BP and/or Grafs in the 2.5 hull. better fit for 7/8 and 1.

Is anyone reloading RST 2.5" 16ga 1oz loads regularly and can give me their whole recipe?
|
I have loaded the 2 1/2 inch RST with the Galandi wad using 1oz of shot but I'm using 7625 powder which is no longer available. If you find a 7/8th oz load you like you can reduce the powder charge a little and use 1 oz of shot. I learned a long time ago that the 7/8th load will break any target and kill any bird if I do my part.

the Hogden site had several loads for 2.5. some with now defunct PB and 7625 but also Universal amd International clays. look at the 16 gauge site. there were some loads listed a while ago using 20/28, American Select, and i think Unique. and 7/8 will break anything as well as 1. i load 3/4 and 7/8 for clays et al. works just fine and is easy on my shoulder and my old LC.

Can't look for it now but I put up a post using Longshot and one ounce. Use at your own risk. Pressures were not my test but were done.

Since you are reloading yourself have you considered using a roll crimp? A roll crimped 2 9/16th (2 1/2) inch shell has the same interior dimension (capacity) as a 2 3/4 in. folded crimp so you can use any published 2 3/4 inch load data with a slight decrease in chamber pressure. I prefer Unique but there are some nice Green Dot loads that produce moderate chamber pressure and reasonable velocities.

So does anyone have a great 7/8 recipe using unique powder since this is what I already use for my 28 reloads? |

Here is the one ounce load I use. I have loaded some new red Cheddites as well as some purple RST empty hulls. Both work the same. Fold crimp and the one ounce fits easily in there. Use at your own risk. |

I like 16 grains Unique chamber pressure less than 8000 psi velocity about 1150 fps. Nice soft shooting load for informal clay target shooting or quail/Ruff Grouse size birds. |
These 1 oz loads off the Hodgdon site fit perfectly in a 2 1/2" Win / Ched hull ,if you try and load them in a 2 3/4 " hull the stack height is too low . I use these loads for hunting all the time in my short chambered guns , they perform well .
18-19 grains of Unique will work with the SG16s wad in a straight walled hull also . For Win/ Ched type hulls - not CF or rem hulls Hodgdon 700-X CCI 209 BP G/BP 13.5 8,800 PSI 1,075 Hodgdon 700-X CCI 209 BP G/BP 13.8 9,500 PSI 1,100 Hodgdon 700-X CCI 209 BP G/BP 14.2 9,800 PSI 1,125 Hodgdon 700-X Win. 209 BP G/BP 13.5 8,500 PSI 1,075 Hodgdon 700-X Win. 209 BP G/BP 14.0 9,000 PSI 1,100 Hodgdon 700-X Win. 209 BP G/BP 14.3 9,300 PSI 1,125 |
Here's a couple more that are tested
Fiochi 2 9/16" 1 oz Unique 19 CCI 209 BP Z-16 1146 6880 16 gauge forum Fiochi 2 9/16" 1 oz Unique 20.5 CCI 209 BP Z-16 1220 8020 16 gauge forum I would not be afraid to use these in any straight walled hull they fit in. |
I would also look into some 7/8 oz loads for the 16. That's my max load for preserve pheasant, and it works well on most shots. It's also a bit easier on older doubles as well.

Based on 16g fourm data I loaded some 7/8 oz with 19 grains of Unique. I always shoot a new load with questionable data in a pump first. Seemed to me too much recoil for my SxS guns. Did not like it in the Remington 31 either.
My opinion, 16 G target loads, 3/4 oz with Green Dot 14 grs is too light 14.5 is about right, I don't need 15 grs for clay targets. 7/8 oz Hunting load 14.5 to about 15 grs Green Dot. All in Cheddite hulls Winchester primers, DR 16 wads fold crimp. 3/4 needs a filler 7/8 crimps well without fillers. William |
Personally, I use 14.8 grs. of International Clays, 7/8 oz of No. 6, a Downrange wad, and Win 209 primer in the reviled RP "black" hull. It has worked well for me in all 16-bore doubles for years.
