Need Name for English Setter Male Pup
I'm getting a male tri-color English Setter pup in about 4 weeks from a friend and guide at Markover in Connecticut. Not my first setter but when we moved back to Massachusetts from southern Ohio I lost one setter in a hurricane and the mother, Molly, lived another 4 years before I had to put her down due to congestive heart failure. Broke my heart. Did not get another setter but did raise and train two labs as we were doing some serious salt water duck hunting.
I'm taking suggestions from friends and family for a male name and this includes the Parker Forum. One of my daughters thinks I should name it 'Parker' but that's too easy. My last Setter male was named 'Briar' and the male lab was named 'Winston' to give you a feel for my leanings I suppose. Any suggestions? :corn: |
I've always liked Parker, but it is a bit cliche for a bird dog.

Lord McKinley Morganfield on the registration papers (also add a middle name of choosing if desired). Call him Mac or Morgan, but I would call him Muddy. (McKinley Morganfield aka Muddy Waters). Muddy Watters was the single most important artist to emerge in post-war American blues.
|
Morgan has a nice ring to it. 'Morg' come in! 'Morg' whoa!
|
My nominee would be The Citadel, with the call name Del.
|
What's the prize for the winner?
How about "Studley Do-Right"? . |
Google "George Washington's Dog's" I have used several of his dogs names in the past. All top notch names.
William |
Allen, sounds like you like tradition and you had Winston. How about Churchill?
|
My granddad's ES was called Spot or Spotty. Imagine that.
|
|
i think ACE would fit that new pup cause thats what he s gona be...charlie
|
How about Vulcan, as in the barrel steel?
Hopefully your new pup will hunt well and have nerves of steel. |
I have a list of Dan Lefever's setters around here somewhere but can't put my hands on it right now.
|
I think your getting the cart ahead of the horse or the name ahead of the dog. get the pup and spend some time with him, Learn his personality and the correct name will come to you.
|
If we had used that process my little brother would be called Sh*thead.

I think his name will be 'Brady'. Thanks all!!
|
If you're any sort of a traditionalist, and it's a Llewellin setter use a derivation of its pedigree name. If it's just an ES, any name will do.
|
I think that a dog should earn their name. Had a lab that was named Holly that came from Hollywood S.C. A deerhound that rode out a hurricane in Gulfport, Miss. that became Gulfport. A Boykin that was B B ( not after the blues singer) Someone said that the pup was much larger than a B B. Pointers called Lulubell, Sam, Kate. Am down to a Boykin called Bay( short for baby girl) She picked over 375 birds as a 2 year old. Am retired and hunt alot and when not shooting, we pick up for tower shoots at Prairie Wildlife. Hunting is better with Parker and dog.

A name should fit the individual dog. |

Best names for field setters have a strong "R" as it carries farther in the field. My first setters ere named related to their Irish ancestry Murphy, Riley but my current Llewellin has a dubious ancestry so I chose to just call him Charlie.

Shadow Oak Bo, Orange & White English Setter, won the 2013 and 2014 Grand Nat'l Championship held at Ames Plantation Grand Junction Tenn. First time an English Setter has won back to back since 1903. Can't see how you could go wrong with the name "BO". Check out the article about BO in Garden & Gun.

My pup's name will be 'Brady'
|
I just read about Bo in Sporting Classics.
Good luck to you and Brady, I'm sure you'll make a great team. |
Allen be careful. Call your dog in a crowd around here and half the dogs and kids will come.Good luck and good hunting.

How about "No Pepper No"

Setter name
My Llewellin's name is Highland Maximus Wind'em and we call him Max. Also, I'm in the Falmouth, MA area and would love an invitation to shoot clays in Plymouth. Would also be interested to hook up this Fall for pheasants/quail at Crane Wlldlife Mangement Area. Send PM with your contact info and let's get introduced.

My Boykins name is Rascal

Match this and then we can talk:shock: Oh, and did I mention four, yes FOUR Super Bowles "Spanky"!!!! I think Brady is a great name for a WINNING dog. Oh, and did I mention Brady was voted MVP for Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XLIX.
|
My lady friend likes 'Brady' and she's every bit as attractive as Tom's spouse. I'm winning on both counts...
