Rio 20 ga 7/8 oz
 

Does anyone have any info on chamber pressure on this load?? I have alway shot RST and love them. A friend gave me some Rio and enjoy shooting them and love the price. I am considering switching to Rio on my steel barreled guns?

I wouldn't shoot them in a damascuss barreled gun. I bet their web site will give you velocity and /or chamber pressure. If not compare the equivalent load from RST VS RIO for say 7/8th oz. The higher velocity load will produce higher pressure.

David, another shell I use is a NOBEL Low Recoil. 20ga., 23/4in., 1200FPS, 3/4oz., Hard Shot #8. I like this shell a lot. Although the difference in recoil is slight you will notice that it is a softer shooting shell.

If you try a 3/4oz load you won't go back to 7/8ths:nono:

I find RIO ammo the best deal out there on factory ammo. I've never seen 12ga target ammo burn as clean as theirs. You can shoot 2-3 boxes and your bbls look like you haven't shot the gun. I reload my high brass Rio ammo using wads from BPI. Not sure I've tried reloading the low brass but I'm sure you can; they're good hulls. They all take the metric primers though.

I use that Rio 7/8 in my Wingmaster Pump, local Skeet club. Wingmaster is stocked high has a good pad and not real light. Parker Trojan 20 shoot 3/4 oz reloads. They are one powder bushing lighter than Alliants lightest published 20/28 powder load. About perfect for sporting Clays targets.

Guns are different but, Noticeable difference in recoil Rio to Reload. I Guess the Trojan would handle the Rio but don't want to shoot 100 shots with them. On the other hand if I took the Parker hunting would probably go up to 7/8 oz and use Alliants data as published. Few shots at birds recoil not so important.

Richard, you're getting different results than the guys at my club. I don't shoot Rio or any factory ammo, but the guys were shooting Rio in their autos and after a couple of boxes the guns wouldn't cycle - they had to clean em. Maybe Rio changed their powers or something for the clean burns you're getting. No one down here will shoot them.

Wow. That's surprising Paul. I think they have now constructed a factory in Texas and are making their ammo here now. Seems I read that somewhere last year. Maybe they changed powder. I know their prices went up a bit some time back, which may reflect the move to US production and higher labor costs. Their ammo used to be the cheapest of it all at Sportsmans Warehouse and a real bargain if you bought it by the case, but now it's about the same as the other major suppliers. I've never in over 50yrs of shotgunning seen shotshells burn as clean as the Rio target and hunting ammo I've used. Even after 4 boxes shot at clays the bbls barely need a cleaning.

I tested a case of the 7/8 20 ga Rio against RST. I found the Rio burnt very clean but at 1250 vs 1125 had noticeably more kick. An old engineering calculation is Energy= 1/2 Mass x Velocity squared. That puts the Rio 23.4% higher in energy. That may not directly correlate to kick but I could feel the difference. I am sticking with RST.

Pretty hot load. I used to shoot them but stopped two years ago.

Did not see the data but someone told me PSI over 10,000.

I don't know if it is true or not. But having used Rios for years in my Parkers they would all get loose over time.
Now after having switched to RST I have not had a single one get loose or have any issues.

Just my observations.

BTW: the RST shells break the clays just as hard if not better and at any distance.

For my Parkers RST is the only shell I want to use if I have my choice.
