well, you aren't going to need them now anyway

Macallan did his first damage today (he has chewed and shredded before but nothing that mattered) he got bored with his chew toy and went to work on the wood stretchers of a upholstered chair -

Jan 31, 2016, last day of the Kansas season. Nothing but wild birds.

These big plains, flyover country to many, stretch from the Texas Panhandle to the Canadian prairie provinces. You'll walk 8 to 10 miles a day following the bird dogs.

In the 1880's and 90's, trains from the east came out here and sportsmen left the club cars and Pullman sleepers and went on buckboard wagons with local farmers in search of sharptail grouse and prairie chickens.

This is Danny Suponski with his first ever ruffed grouse that was pointed at about 25 yards. There were three grouse together in a cover of old apple trees and heavy ground cover. we walked in over Grace and the birds went up. One peeled to the right, one went straight ahead and the third peeled high and left out beyond Danny. Shots were fired in all directions but Danny was the only one who connected. His bird was hit hard and went down hard but it wasn't dead. Danny and I went down the slope to where the bird went down. Suddenly a grouse flushed from about that spot and we stood there slack-jawed that his bird had taken wing after being knocked down. Oh well... that's the way it goes sometimes. We turned to walk back and join Dave and Jamie but Grace was not with us. We looked back downslope and there she was pointing where the bird had just flushed from. I called her, thinking she was picking up the scent from the departed bird but she wouldn't budge. Hmmm... we started back down to her but then she pounced on the spot and came up with Danny's first grouse... Well Done! - to both of you!!

The second picture is after she cut her rear pad on ice in the woods in January on an exercise and training mission.

Rich Anderson 03-06-2016 07:14 PM

Dean didn't anyone tell you that exercise is a bad idea for both man and dog???

Scott you have some very nice GSP's....my favorite breed. I'd like to find a started dog to give Daisy some help. I will end up in the dog house when that happens:banghead:

Unfortunately I lost many pictures due to a computer problem. Here is one I salvaged of my oldest setter Trapper. He was one heck of a grouse dog with many hundreds of points to his credit. I shot birds over him in 7 states and one Canadian Provence. Sadly I lost him 2 weeks ago after 15 years of loyal friendship.

Rich Anderson 03-07-2016 08:52 AM

Gary I'm sorry to hear of Trapper's passing. It's the one truly downside of being owned by a dog. We have all been there at least once and some of us multiple times and we would all do it again for the love of a dog.

Rick Losey 03-07-2016 09:05 AM

Dean- saw novelty napkins in a store yesterday- with a picture like your last one

the caption read "it's all fun and games until someone ends up in a cone"

We did not have grouse in my part of Ohio. We had rabbits and roosters. This was my first grouse...a big guard bird that led the dogs away from the others. A group of 8 birds only a couple yards from us. No one new they were there, when they flushed from their hid it scared us so bad no one could get a good shot off. One of my recent woodcocks from potter county PA and a Kansas wild rooster from 2011....SXS Ohio

charlie cleveland 03-13-2016 08:54 AM

great pictures gota be some good memories in them...charlie

Gary Laudermilch 03-15-2016 02:11 PM

Nice looking setter. You should have ordered at least a few black or brown spots though. All white dogs are a bugger to find in the snow even with a gps.
